Due to the influence of deception, In response to the repeated urging of Dharma friends, Without turning back, Dza Tod Char Kyepa, Abu Trelpo wrote these authentic words of truth. May all become a place of trust! Good! Good! Good! If the root of definite renunciation and individual liberation is firm, The branches of altruistic Bodhicitta will flourish. If the excellent fruits of the profound path of secret mantra ripen, This well-spoken treatise is like a tree bearing edible fruit. Any fortunate one who desires to taste the supreme path's excellent fruit, Nurturing their lips with the three confidences, With the wings of skillful means and wisdom, traversing the realm of Dharma, Will surely reach the realm of the four bodies without hindrance. Therefore, may the intellect of explanation, debate, and composition, The sun of youth, blazing with the radiance of speech, The youthful sun of good fortune, opening the lotus of the clear mind, Rise today! If one does not waste the glory of this day, And knows how to drink it as a companion to the lotus of wisdom, Then hundreds of excellences will come unbidden. This was said by Paltrul Rinpoche. Thus begins the conduct of a good friend: By relying on a wise friend, wisdom increases; By relying on a compassionate friend, Bodhicitta arises; By relying on a contented friend, desires decrease; By relying on a generous friend, the mind of generosity arises; By relying on a peaceful and gentle friend, one's own mind becomes good; From a friend with renunciation, renunciation arises; By relying on a friend with definite renunciation, the desire for liberation arises; By relying on a friend who seeks the future life, one remembers virtue; By relying on a good friend, definite renunciation arises; By relying on a Dharma-practicing friend, one remembers to practice Dharma; By relying on a friend with few desires, contentment arises; From a diligent friend, great courage arises; By associating with a virtuous friend, qualities increase; By relying on a friend who desires liberation, one seeks ultimate happiness; From a friend with a good heart, good thoughts arise; From a friend with pure vision, faith arises; By associating with a wise friend, all wishes are fulfilled; The conduct of a good friend is thus. Therefore, one should rely on a virtuous friend. The conduct of a bad friend begins as follows: By relying on an ignorant friend, wisdom diminishes; By relying on an angry friend, one's own mind becomes bad; By relying on a lustful friend, one remembers young women; By relying on a stingy friend, stinginess arises; By relying on a self-

Relying on the powerful, one remembers arrogance. Relying on friends without renunciation, one becomes attached to this life. Relying on friends who only care about appearances, one forgets the afterlife. Relying on inferior friends, one remembers farming. Relying on friends who chase profits, one thinks of doing business. Relying on friends who crave wealth, one thinks of accumulating and hoarding. Relying on lazy friends, one becomes indolent. Relying on distracted friends, one is carried away by distraction. Relying on friends who are focused on appearances, one is distracted in this life. Associating with sinful friends, sinful thoughts arise. Associating with faithless friends, pure appearances are diminished. Associating with friends who have lost the point, one remembers non-virtue. Such is the conduct of bad friends. Therefore, abandon sinful friends. This was written by Paltrul Rinpoche at the request of Lama Rigzin Gyatso. May it be virtuous! Homage to Manjushri). The wondrous wisdom of all the Buddhas, manifesting as a form body out of compassion, protecting beings with power, may the prince, the courageous Bodhisattva Manjushri, protect us. Having obtained the leisure and endowments, free from faults, and possessing complete qualities, young one, if you wish to properly study the teachings of the Buddha, you need the practice that includes hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Meditation without hearing is mostly futile, virtuous actions without essence are like shooting arrows in the dark. Many who have not tamed their own minds, but only have the appearance of practitioners, go against the true Dharma. From whom should one hear? Relying on a true teacher who is learned and compassionate, and does not tire of teaching, is essential, so strive to find a teacher who possesses a collection of qualities. Writing, reading, sound, and all fields of knowledge are the basis for hearing, contemplation, and meditation. In order to accept or reject all knowable things, learn and then seek various qualities extensively. If you do not study in your youth, you will feel regret when you are old, so at this time, learning is the most important thing. Do not be picky about what to study and from whom to learn. Whatever anyone knows, learn from them immediately, just as drops of water accumulate to become an ocean. The accumulation of qualities will fill your mind. Even if a bad person with a hundred faults shows one quality of knowledge, do not focus on the faults, but learn that quality, just as a swan separates milk from water.
