One should also act in this way: When washing with water, first offer it to the Three Jewels, and then pour it into one's own vessel. Whatever happiness, fame, wealth, etc., one desires and finds pleasing in this life is due to the grace of the Three Jewels. One should regard the Three Jewels with devotion and pure perception, thinking, "I am offering to the Three Jewels themselves." Whatever roots of virtue are accomplished through one's prostrations, offerings, deity meditation, mantra recitation, etc., all of these should be offered to the Three Jewels and dedicated for the benefit of all sentient beings. On the eighth, fifteenth, and thirtieth days of the month, etc., one should make offerings to the Three Jewels as much as possible, and one should never interrupt the regular offerings to the Three Jewels. At all times and in all circumstances, whether happiness or suffering arises, one should never forget to take refuge solely in the Three Jewels. By doing so, if fear and terror arise in dreams, and one is able to take refuge, then it will also happen in the bardo; therefore, one should strive to make it so. In short, one should place all one's trust in the Three Jewels alone, and even if one's life is at stake, one should not abandon taking refuge. In the past, in India, a Buddhist layman was captured by non-Buddhists, who said to him, "If you give up taking refuge in the Three Jewels, we will not kill you; if you do not give it up, we will kill you." The layman replied, "I may give up taking refuge in words only, but I will never give it up from the depths of my heart." Thereupon, the non-Buddhists killed the layman. Therefore, one must certainly be like that. If one abandons taking refuge in the Three Jewels, then no matter how profound the Dharma one practices, one will not be included among Buddhists, for "the difference between outsiders and insiders lies in refuge." Abstaining from non-virtuous actions, and attaining common siddhis through the practice of deities and channels and winds, etc., are also found among non-Buddhists. However, because they do not understand taking refuge in the Three Jewels, they are separated from the path of liberation and will never be liberated from samsara. Lord Atisha himself, although there was nothing in the ocean-like teachings of Sutra and Tantra that he did not know or see, nevertheless considered taking refuge alone to be the most important of all these, and therefore he always spoke of refuge alone to all the assembled gatherings, and thus he was known as the "Refuge Pandit." Therefore, once one has entered the path of liberation and become a Buddhist, refuge and...

The teachings on refuge should be practiced without abandoning them even if it costs one's life. As the sutra says: "Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is a true layperson, and at no time should they take refuge in other gods. Those who take refuge in the sacred Dharma are free from the mind of harming and hurting. Those who take refuge in the noble Sangha should not associate with non-Buddhists." As it is said. Now, even those of us who claim to be followers of the Three Jewels have no respect for the supports of the Three Jewels. They treat Buddha images and scriptures as mere possessions, engaging in buying, selling, and mortgaging them. This is called consuming the flesh of the Three Jewels, and the offense is extremely grave. Furthermore, regarding painted or sculpted Buddha images, it is extremely wrong to discuss their imperfections and find fault with them at times other than when they are being measured and crafted. Scriptures should not be placed directly on the ground or stepped on. All disrespectful actions, such as touching the pages with saliva-covered fingers, are particularly serious offenses. The Bhagavan said: "In the final five hundred years, I will dwell in the form of letters. Think of them as me, and at that time, show them respect." As the worldly saying goes, "Do not place an image on top of documents." Among all the supports of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind, the support of speech is particularly important as it shows what to accept and reject, and it maintains the lineage of the teachings. It is said that it is no different from the actual Buddha and is even more excellent. Moreover, most people nowadays do not consider the vajra and bell to be supports of the Three Jewels, but rather as ordinary utensils. However, the vajra represents the Buddha's mind, the five wisdoms, and so on. The bell also has the form of a face, and in the lower tantras, it is said to be Vairochana, and in the upper tantras, it is said to be Vajradhatvishvari, the form of the body. The seed syllables of the eight mothers are directly in the form of letters, and others.
