Therefore, one should regard the (Guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) as the actual Three Jewels. After taking refuge in the Sangha, one should regard the supports of the Sangha Jewel, even the red and yellow robes, as the actual Sangha, offering them with respect, placing them on one's head, keeping them in a clean place, and generating faith and pure perception. The three concordances are: the Lama, the virtuous friend who now shows one what to accept and reject, should be regarded as the actual Buddha Jewel, and one should not even disdain the shadow of his body, but strive to serve and honor him. All the teachings given by that holy Lama should be regarded as the actual Dharma Jewel, accepting whatever is said and not violating even a word of the teachings. The retinue and disciples of the Lama, as well as one's own Dharma friends who practice in harmony, should be regarded as the actual Sangha Jewel, serving them with body, speech, and mind with respect, and not doing anything that displeases them even for a moment. Especially in the Secret Mantra Vajrayana, the main object of refuge is the Lama. Therefore, the Lama's body is the Sangha, the Lama's speech is the Dharma, and the Lama's mind is the Buddha. One should understand that he is the embodiment of the totality of the Three Jewels, serving him with the attitude of "whatever you do is good, only you know my mind," and constantly striving to pray. If one's own actions of body, speech, and mind displease the Lama, it is equivalent to abandoning all objects of refuge. Therefore, with great determination and perseverance, one should strive at all times and in all ways to please the Lama. In general, whatever happens, whether it is happiness or suffering, good or bad, sickness or pain, one should entrust one's mind to the Lama and the Three Jewels alone. When happy, one should know that it is due to the kindness of the Three Jewels. For the happiness and virtuous things of this world, even the slightest breeze that blows in hot weather, are said to be the kindness and blessings of the Buddha. Similarly, even a moment of virtuous thought that arises in the mind is due to the inconceivable power of the Buddha's blessings. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Just as in the night, in the darkness of the clouds, a flash of lightning reveals everything, so too, by the power of the Buddha, in the hundred paths, people may temporarily have thoughts of merit and wisdom." Therefore, whatever benefits and happiness there are, one should know that they are due to the kindness of the Buddha. Sickness and suffering, demonic influences

Whatever obstacles from demons or other sources may arise, do not rely on other methods to dispel illness and demonic influences except for praying to the Three Jewels. Even if it becomes necessary to seek medical treatment or exorcism, understand these also as the activity of the Three Jewels and practice accordingly. Train in faith and pure perception by understanding all appearances as manifestations of the Three Jewels. Even when you go to other places for business or other purposes, prostrate to the Buddhas and Three Jewels in the direction you are going before departing. At all times and in all circumstances, take as your yidam the refuge of the Nyingthig teachings, the actual embodiment of the Three Jewels, or the common refuge of all vehicles: "Lama la kyab su chio (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Guru I take refuge), Sangye la kyab su chio (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Buddha I take refuge), Cho la kyab su chio (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Dharma I take refuge), Gendun la kyab su chio (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Sangha I take refuge)." This is known as the fourfold refuge. Also, praise others for taking refuge and encourage them to do so, entrusting all hopes for this life and future lives to the Three Jewels, and strive in taking refuge. When going to sleep, visualize the field of merit and the assembly of deities in your heart center as described earlier, and entrust your mind to them as you fall asleep. If you cannot do this, contemplate that the Guru and all the Three Jewels regard you with compassion and love, and are manifestly present at your pillow. Generate faith and pure perception, and sleep without being separated from the recollection of the Three Jewels. When eating and drinking, visualize the Three Jewels in your throat and offer them the taste of the food and drink. If you cannot do this, aspire to offer the essence of everything you eat and drink to the Three Jewels. If you have new clothes to wear, before putting them on yourself, raise them slightly towards the sky, thinking of offering them to the Three Jewels. Then, thinking that the Three Jewels have granted them to you, put them on yourself. Regarding external appearances, whether it be a flower garden, a clear river, a mansion, a delightful forest, vast wealth and possessions, handsome men and beautiful women adorned with ornaments, or anything else that pleases and attracts your mind, whatever you see, think of offering it to the Three Jewels.
