A drop of water falling into the great ocean, it will not be exhausted until the ocean is exhausted. Similarly, the virtue dedicated to complete enlightenment will not be exhausted until enlightenment is attained. Thus it is said. Similarly, if one desires to attain the ultimate state of a Hearer, Solitary Realizer, or complete enlightenment, or if one desires to obtain the body of a god or human in higher realms, or if one desires temporary results such as longevity and beauty, whatever the purpose for which one performs virtuous deeds, one must dedicate them to that purpose. As Drikung Kyobpa Rinpoche said: The two accumulations are like a wish-fulfilling jewel. If you do not diligently cleanse them with prayers, the desired result will not arise. Therefore, be diligent in this final dedication. Thus it is said. Therefore, whether one's virtuous deeds become a cause for complete enlightenment depends on the power of dedication. No matter how vast the conditioned virtuous deeds one accumulates, if one does not turn them around with dedication, they will not become a path to liberation. Geshe Khampa Lungpa said: All conditioned virtues are unspecified, therefore, make great aspirations for the benefit of sentient beings. Thus it is said. Similarly, performing virtuous deeds for the sake of one's parents and relatives, and performing virtuous deeds for the sake of the deceased, if not dedicated, will not be obtained. If dedicated, it will be obtained as it is dedicated. In the past, the people in the city of Vaishali invited the Bhagavan to a feast the next day. After the inviters had returned, five hundred hungry ghosts came and said to the Bhagavan: Please dedicate to us the virtuous roots of the alms offered by the people of Vaishali to the Bhagavan and his retinue tomorrow. The Bhagavan, knowing full well, asked: Who are you? Why should the virtuous roots of the people of Vaishali be dedicated to you? They said: We are the parents of these people in the city of Vaishali, and we were born as hungry ghosts because of the karma of miserliness. The Bhagavan said: Then, come tomorrow at the time of dedication, and I will dedicate it to you. They said: We have taken such ugly bodies, and we are ashamed and dare not come. The Bhagavan said: When you accumulated bad karma,

One should have been ashamed, but wasn't ashamed at that time. Now that one has already taken a bad body, what good is being ashamed? If one doesn't come, there is no way to dedicate, (the Buddha) said. Oh, then I will come, (he) said and left. The next day, at the time of dedication, the pretas came to request dedication. When the people of Vaishali were frightened and ran away, the Blessed One said: You do not need to be afraid. These are your own parents who have been reborn as pretas. They are saying this: Should the merit be dedicated or not? (The people) requested that it be dedicated in any case. The Blessed One said: Whatever merit there is from this generosity, may it go to the pretas. May the bad body of the pretas disappear, and may they attain the bliss of the heavenly realms. Having said this, those pretas passed away and were reborn in the heavenly realm of the Thirty-three (Trayastrimsa). Similarly, Jetsun Milarepa also said: The great meditator who meditates on the mountain, and the patron who provides the means of livelihood, have an interdependent relationship that grows together. The essence of interdependence is dedication. Dedicating in this way is also for dedicating to the cause of perfect enlightenment. It is necessary to grasp it with the wisdom of the three wheels without objectification. If it is not like that, but is defiled by the stain of clinging to the reality of the three wheels, it is called a poisonous dedication. The Sutra Collection says: Just as eating delicious food mixed with poison, clinging to pure Dharma is also like that, the Victorious One (Buddha) said. The three wheels are: the merit to be dedicated, the person for whom it is dedicated, and the purpose for which it is dedicated. Because the non-toxic dedication grasped by the wisdom that realizes the selflessness of these three does not appear in the realm of ordinary beings, if one thinks of dedicating in the way that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past dedicated, it will accomplish the dedication of the three wheels completely pure. In the confession of downfalls, it also says: Just as the Buddhas and Blessed Ones of the past have dedicated, just as the Buddhas and Blessed Ones of the future will dedicate, just as the Buddhas and Blessed Ones who are dwelling now have made dedication, I also dedicate in the same way.
