A. Thus it was said. Therefore, it is extremely important for those who perform death rituals nowadays to observe silence during recitations and mantras in gatherings and other occasions. Recitations mixed with ordinary chatter are meaningless. Especially when it is for the sake of the deceased, sentient beings in the bardo state, suffering from fear and pain, run to the benefactors and lamas hoping for help. At that time, if their samadhi is unclear, their vows and commitments are impure, and thoughts of attachment and aversion arise, the beings in the bardo, possessing clairvoyance, will know these things and develop wrong views or hatred towards the lamas, which is said to lead to lower realms. Therefore, such lamas are better off not being there at all. Especially the rituals of Secret Mantra Vajrayana, which are said to be "the door of words that clarify the generation stage," are merely words that clarify the key points of the generation stage. Without even a thought towards the meaning of the generation and completion stages to be clarified, they just use empty words, saying "clarify, clarify, meditate, meditate, focus, focus," and recite many ritualistic words in a vague, noisy, and chaotic manner. When it comes to the actual recitation and practice of the essential meaning, the mind becomes lax, and even the basic posture is ruined. The source of hundreds of non-virtues, the mouth and so on, becomes the basis, opening the door to a treasure trove of irrelevant chatter. They just count beads, wasting time. Occasionally looking up at the sky, they say "Vajrapushpe Dhupe (藏文,梵文天城体:वज्रपुष्पे धूपे,梵文罗马拟音:vajrapuṣpe dhūpe,汉语字面意思:Vajra Flower, Incense)," and then play music loudly. This is even worse than the shadow of a ritual. Therefore, it is better to recite a confession or the Samantabhadra Prayer with pure intention. Like this, the lamas who send the deceased to lower realms by relying on impure recitations and the shadow of rituals are like performing rituals for the living, which cause more harm than good. Such people, eating offerings, are like eating burning iron balls. Therefore, offerings of faith and the dead

Those who consume offerings, whether they are lamas or monks, should not make the amount of meat, the thickness of the sauce, or the quality of the offerings the core of their practice. Whether it is a sick person or a deceased person, for those sentient beings who are in distress, suffering, and without refuge, one should be motivated by loving-kindness and compassion to benefit them, and by bodhicitta. To the best of one's ability, one should strive without distraction from the depths of one's heart to practice the generation stage and completion stage. If one does not understand these, one should at least recite the words of the scriptures and remember their meaning, or even just have loving-kindness and compassion for the wretched sentient beings, and generate faith and conviction in the infallible truth of the Three Jewels, and strive with body, speech, and mind united as one. One must ensure that the rituals and recitations are accurate in pronunciation and clear in wording. Relying on the compassion of the Three Jewels, the infallible power of cause and effect, and the immeasurable benefits of bodhicitta, one will surely benefit the sick or the deceased. Just as it is said, "Purifying one's obscurations from the seat of a person," one simultaneously perfects the two accumulations of oneself and others, connects with the beings to be tamed, and places them on the path to liberation. Therefore, one must strive to do these things. In general, in this day and age, those lamas or monks who are slightly better and understand cause and effect, merely out of fear of the faults of offerings, do not even offer blessings or aspirations to the sick and deceased who are in distress and suffering, thereby cutting off the root of loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta. Most people are too selfish and come to the gatherings of patrons, but instead of reciting the texts that everyone needs, they take out their own heavy prayer books and recite them carefully, as if afraid of getting them dirty. Whoever they are, they are very careful about their own personal recitations, as if they are purifying their own obscurations or offerings. When reciting scriptures in the gatherings of patrons, they are distracted and look around, as if they are just going through the motions. Whether the object of help is dead or alive, if they do not think of their benefit, then they have cut off the root of loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta. Even if they purify the offerings later, they cannot purify the defilements of the offerings with their selfish and self-centered evil thoughts.
