If such qualities arise in the mind-stream, then there will be faith and pure perception towards the superiors, and love and compassion towards the inferiors, and there is no way that a unique quality will not arise. The incomparable Dagpo Rinpoche asked Jetsun Milarepa, "When is the time to lead a sangha?" Milarepa replied, "When your mind's nature is different from what it is now, and you clearly see a state free from all doubts, then you will also have a unique perception of me, the old father, as the actual Buddha, and you will definitely have a genuine love and compassion for sentient beings. At that time, you can lead a sangha." Therefore, one should rely on love and compassion, base oneself on the mind of enlightenment, and practice the Dharma without separating the three aspects of listening, contemplating, and meditating. First, if one does not cut off the imputations through listening, one will not know how to practice. As it is said, "Meditation without listening is like a handless person climbing a cliff." The so-called cutting off imputations through listening does not mean that one must know all the vast and numerous objects of knowledge, because it is impossible to know all of them in a short life in this degenerate age. Therefore, one must know without error all the methods of practicing the Dharma that one is going to practice from beginning to end, and one must cut off all imputations through contemplation. In the past, when Jowo Je was staying in Nyetang, Zhang Nachung Tunpa, Kyung Tunpa, and Lhangtsang Tunpa asked the master about the tenets of valid cognition. Jowo said, "There are many tenets of external non-Buddhists and internal Buddhists. All of these are a series of conceptual thoughts. There is no need to count all the conceptual thoughts, because life is short, and now is the time to gather the essence." Zhang Nachung Tunpa asked, "How to gather the essence?" Jowo said, "Cultivate love, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment for all sentient beings as vast as the sky. For their benefit, strive to accumulate the two accumulations of merit and wisdom. Dedicate all the roots of virtue arising from this to perfect enlightenment in common with all sentient beings. And know that the nature of all these is emptiness, and that their characteristics are like dreams and illusions." If one does not know how to summarize the essential points of practice in this way, then knowing, knowing, understanding, understanding, being aware, being aware...

I say there is no benefit. Previously, when Jowo Je Lhachik (Atisha) came to Tibet, the great translator Rinchen Zangpo invited him. Jowo asked the translator, "Do you know this Dharma and this Dharma?" He asked in sequence, and it seemed that there was nothing he didn't know. Jowo was very pleased and said, "It's amazing! With a scholar like you residing in Tibet, it seems I didn't need to come to Tibet." Later, he asked again, "If you were to practice all of these on one cushion, how would you do it?" The translator replied, "I would practice according to what is taught in each of the scriptures." Jowo was displeased and said, "The translator is rotten! I had to come to Tibet." He asked, "Then how should it be done?" He replied, "All the Dharmas must be condensed into one essential point and practiced." Therefore, if you don't know how to condense the essential points of practice on top of the Lama's instructions, there is no way. If you know this but don't practice, there is no benefit. As Je Mila said, "When a person is hungry, knowing there is food is not enough, you must eat it. Similarly, knowing the Dharma is not enough, you must practice it." The essence of practicing in this way must be to become an antidote to the afflictions and self-grasping in your own mind. As Je Mila said, "Whether you have eaten or not, you can tell by looking at the face of the little red one." This means that whether you know the Dharma or not, whether you have practiced or not, you can tell by whether it has become an antidote to self-grasping and afflictions. Similarly, Putowa asked Geshe Tonpa, "What is the dividing line between Dharma and non-Dharma?" Tonpa replied, "If it is an antidote to afflictions, it is Dharma. If it is not an antidote, it is not Dharma. If it is not in accordance with all worldly people, it is Dharma. If it is in accordance, it is not Dharma. If it is in accordance with the scriptures and instructions, it is Dharma. If it is not in accordance, it is not Dharma. If the result is good, it is Dharma. If the result is bad, it is not Dharma." Also, the scholar Chegom said, "Believing in the law of cause and effect is the correct view of the lowest faculty. Understanding all internal and external phenomena as the union of appearance and emptiness, awareness and emptiness, is the correct view of the middle faculty. Understanding the object of observation, the observer, and the act of observing as inseparable is the correct view of the highest faculty. Abiding in single-pointed concentration is the correct meditation of the lowest faculty. Abiding in the concentration of the four unions is the middl
