When 'Brom ston pa asked Lord Atisha, "What is the ultimate of all Dharmas?" He replied, "The ultimate of all Dharmas is emptiness, which has the essence of compassion." For example, in this world, there is something called 'the single potent medicine hero' (sman dpa' bo chig thub), which acts as an antidote to all ailments. Similarly, like the single potent medicine hero, if one realizes the meaning of the emptiness of Dharma-nature, it becomes an antidote to all afflictions. When asked, "If one says they have realized emptiness, why does everyone's attachment and aversion not diminish?" Lord Atisha said, "That is because everything has become empty talk. If one genuinely realizes the meaning of emptiness, the three doors of body, speech, and mind will be as if pressed down by a ball of cotton, or like pouring sour yogurt into tsampa porridge. Teacher Deva said, 'Merely doubting whether the nature of all dharmas is empty or not empty will cause samsara to crumble.' Therefore, the meaning of emptiness

Remaining continuously in a state of focus is meditation. Within that state of meditation, accumulating the two illusory accumulations of merit and wisdom is practice. If one has something that has fallen into such experience, it will come in dreams. If it comes in dreams, it will come at the time of death. If it comes at the time of death, it will come in the bardo. If it comes in the bardo, one will definitely attain supreme accomplishment, it is said. Therefore, all the eighty-four thousand doors of Dharma spoken by the Victorious Ones are methods for generating the mind of enlightenment, which has the essence of emptiness and compassion, within one's being. If one is separated from this precious mind of enlightenment, then no matter how profound the Dharma of view and meditation may seem, it will not benefit one in attaining complete Buddhahood. The practices of secret mantra, such as the generation stage and completion stage, if they are grasped by the mind of enlightenment, will become the cause for attaining complete Buddhahood in this life. However, if one is separated from the mind of enlightenment, there is no difference from the paths of the non-Buddhists. The non-Buddhists also have many practices such as meditating on deities, reciting mantras, meditating on the channels and winds, and adopting and abandoning based on cause and effect. However, because they lack these two, refuge and the generation of the mind, they are unable to be liberated from the state of samsara. Therefore, Geshe Kharak Gomchung also said: 'Even if one takes all the vows from refuge up to mantra, it is useless if one's mind does not turn away from worldly dharmas. Even if one constantly teaches Dharma to others, it is useless if one's pride is not pacified. Even if one constantly increases one's practice, it is useless if one loses the basis of refuge. Even if one strives in virtuous practice day and night, it is useless if one is not grasped by the mind of enlightenment.' He said that if one does not properly grasp the foundation of these two, refuge and the generation of the mind, then no matter how extensively one studies, contemplates, and meditates on the Dharma, it is like building a nine-story palace on a frozen lake in winter, and decorating it with carvings and paintings, but ultimately there is no essence. Therefore, do not underestimate these two, refuge and the generation of the mind, thinking that they are inferior Dharmas or Dharmas for beginners. Rather, one must accomplish the three aspects of all paths—preliminary, actual, and concluding—within them. It is very important to focus on and cultivate only this in all situations, good and bad, high and low. Especially the lama and

Ermowa said: There is no way that those who eat filial piety food and the property of the dead, and those who lead the dead, do not have a genuine Bodhicitta in their minds. If you are separated from Bodhicitta, no matter what kind of rituals and cleansing you do, it will not benefit anyone, dead or alive. Even if it seems to be for the benefit of others, it is ultimately mixed with selfishness. In this way, one creates endless defilements of wealth and sins for oneself, and in the next life, one has no choice but to go to the evil realms. Therefore, even if a person has such wonders as flying in the sky like a bird, burrowing into the ground like a mouse, passing through mountains and rocks like a wall, having unobstructed clairvoyance, and leaving footprints on stones, if there is no Bodhicitta in his mind, then he is either a heretic or possessed by a great demon. If one follows such a person with foolish faith and makes offerings, etc., in the end, both oneself and others will be destroyed. If there is a genuine Bodhicitta in one's mind, then whatever is related to it is meaningful, even if there are no other qualities. However, it is difficult to know where a Bodhisattva is. It is said that there are many Bodhisattvas who are skilled in means even among butchers and prostitutes. Therefore, it is difficult to know whether or not another person has Bodhicitta in their mind. Therefore, the Blessed One also said, "No one can measure another person except for me and those like me." Therefore, one should regard the deity, lama, virtuous friend, etc., who generate Bodhicitta in one's mind as the actual Buddha. Even if one has the appearance of having realized the meaning of reality, or having attained clairvoyance and samadhi, or seeing the face of the yidam deity, etc., if, based on these, immutable love, compassion, and Bodhicitta continue to grow, then one should determine that this is a quality. If, based on these, love, compassion, and Bodhicitta diminish, then those appearances of the path are undoubtedly obstacles of demons or inverted paths. In particular, the genuine realization of reality.
