It is said that increasing diligence in practice is a sign of not being carried away by the eight worldly concerns. Nowadays, to those who are known as great meditators and good lamas, others say, "Now you don't need prostrations, recitations, accumulating merit, purifying obscurations, etc.," and they praise them. And they themselves think that because I am such and such, I don't need anything. The Peerless Dagpo Rinpoche said, "Thinking that you don't need it is a sign that you need it even more." The Indian Jowo Dipamkara also diligently cultivated one "khal" of land every day. His attendants said, "You are a great lama, and people will mock you for doing land work, and it is hard work, so please let us do it." He said, "What? Then will you also eat my food?" Therefore, until one attains the state of perfect and complete enlightenment, there are karmas and habitual tendencies to be purified, and there are higher and higher qualities to be attained. So, without becoming a matter of leisure and occasional Dharma, one must strive from the depths of one's heart without being content with Dharma. In general, whether or not one attains the state of Buddhahood depends entirely on diligence. Therefore, one must strive in these three kinds of diligence. Even if one has very good wisdom, but only has inferior diligence, one will only become an inferior practitioner. Even if one does not have very good wisdom, but has excellent diligence, one will become an excellent practitioner. Without diligence, even if one has other qualities, they are useless. The Omniscient Jigme Lingpa said: For a person without diligence, wisdom, power, and strength cannot protect them, just like a captain with a ship who is entangled by weeds. Therefore, at all times and in all circumstances, reduce the amount of food, shorten the amount of sleep, and straighten the mind. If there is no diligence like drawing a bowstring without loosening, then leisure and occasional Dharma will not go anywhere. Fifth, the perfection of meditation: First, unless one relies on a solitary place away from busyness and distraction, meditation cannot arise in the mindstream. Therefore, it is very important to first abandon distraction. Moreover, gathering is of the nature of separation: parents, siblings, spouses, relatives, friends, even the flesh and bones of the body born together will separate.

If it is a conditioned phenomenon, thinking, "What is the use of being attached to impermanent friends?" one should always stay alone. As Raspa Zhiwa Wo said, "Being alone in the state of a Buddha, Dharma-concordant friends are the support for virtuous practice, three or four or more become the cause of attachment and aversion, I (Raspa Zhiwa Wo) also stay alone." Desire is the source of all faults, even if one has it, one does not know contentment. The more enjoyment and wealth one has, the more miserly one becomes. As it is said, "Whoever has wealth has miserliness." It is also said, "Having it, one still wants more, like a rich person." As it is said, "Without wealth, one is free from enemies," the more food, wealth, and enjoyment one has, the more one is harmed by enemies and thieves. Therefore, at all times, one spends one's life accumulating, guarding, and increasing these three things. Moreover, there is nothing but suffering and sin. Therefore, the noble Nagarjuna also said, "Exhausted by accumulating, guarding, and increasing, know that wealth is an endless ruin." Even if one person has all the wealth and enjoyment of the southern continent of Jambudvipa, in reality, it is only enough for one person's food and clothing. However, the more one has, the more one cannot even feed one's own mouth or clothe one's own back, disregarding all sins and evil words, and throwing the next life to the wind. This life is gambled with one's life, and for the sake of tiny possessions, one disregards shame, embarrassment, Dharma, and the future. All Dharma and vows are abandoned. One spends one's time only for eating, for gaining, and for obtaining, like spirits seeking offerings, and one spends one's life without experiencing even a single day of leisure and happiness. In the end, the accumulated enjoyment becomes the cause of one's own death, and one dies under swords and weapons for the sake of oneself. The wealth and enjoyment accumulated in one lifetime are enjoyed and wasted by enemies and others. The mountain of sins accumulated for these things is only borne by oneself, wandering endlessly in the unbearable depths of the lower realms. Therefore, if one has a little wealth, now is the time to be free.
