It is said, entrust everything to the Dharma, entrust the root of the Dharma to the beggar, entrust the root of the beggar to death, entrust the root of death to the empty tomb. Now, we people, for the Dharma, do not need a bit of hardship and perseverance, in addition to doing worldly things in this life, we hope to achieve the Dharma in a state of ease, happiness, and perfection. We also think that others are like this, saying that he is a good lama, both Dharma and worldly aspects are fully possessed. How can there be a way to fully possess both Dharma and worldly aspects? Those who think that both Dharma and worldly aspects are fully possessed are likely to only possess some good worldly aspects, but the true Dharma will definitely not be there. The idea of practicing both Dharma and worldly aspects at the same time is like sewing with two needle points, putting fire and water in one container, riding two horses facing opposite directions together, it is impossible to succeed at all. For a person, there is no way to have someone greater than our teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, but he did not think of a way to achieve both Dharma and worldly aspects at the same time, so he abandoned the throne of the wheel-turning king like spitting, and by the Niranjana River for six years, eating only one drop of water and one grain of wheat each year, and practiced hardship and perseverance. People like Jetsun Milarepa, when practicing the Dharma, had no food, no clothes, only ate nettles, and his body became like a skeleton, covered with green hair. When others saw him, they did not know whether he was a human or a ghost. This is the reason why Dharma and worldly aspects cannot be practiced at the same time. Is it because Milarepa was clumsy in his methods, so he did not know that Dharma and worldly aspects can be practiced at the same time? Similarly, the great accomplished Melong Dorje only ate nettle bark and practiced for nine years to achieve accomplishment. The omniscient Dharma King Longchen Rabjampa also maintained his life for several months with twenty-one mercury pills, and when it snowed, he would crawl into a basket and use both clothes and cushions as blankets, and practiced hardship in the Dharma, etc. All the accomplished ones in the past were like this.

Therefore, abandoning all the affairs of this life, one must practice through hardship and perseverance in order to attain accomplishment. No one has ever attained accomplishment by practicing Dharma while simultaneously pursuing worldly affairs in comfort and ease. As Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa said, "Once you have prepared to have a full stomach, a warm place to stay, and a comfortable residence, and a good patron, the demons will have been accomplished before the Dharma is accomplished." Geshe Shawopa also said, "If you sincerely practice Dharma, you must focus your mind on a beggar. You need someone who can let the beggar die in the end. If such a thought arises, then the gods, demons, and humans will certainly not make you tired." Jetsun Milarepa also said, "When I am sick, there is no one to ask about me, and when I die, there is no one to cry for me. If I can die in this mountain retreat, the yogi's wish will be fulfilled. There are no human footprints at the door, and no bloodstains inside. If I can die in this mountain retreat, the yogi's wish will be perfected. There is no one to ask where I have gone, and no one to expect where I have come from. If I can die in this mountain retreat, the yogi's wish will be perfected. The corpse rots and is eaten by worms, and the veins are sucked by leeches. If I can die in this mountain retreat, the yogi's wish will be perfected." Therefore, one must cast all attachment to this life to the wind, disregard all hardships and heat and cold, and strive to practice the Dharma. The forbearance that does not fear the profound meaning is: the profound reality of emptiness, and especially the key to the reality of the Great Perfection of self-nature, free from effort. When hearing the twelve vajra laughs that transcend good and evil, cause and effect, and the eight great words of wonder, etc., one should not generate wrong views about them, and strive to understand their correct meaning. If not, if one generates wrong views or slanders them, that is the evil karma of abandoning the Dharma, which is the cause of not being able to escape from the depths of hell for countless kalpas. As it is said, "The evil karma that is worse than the five heinous crimes, I confess the accumulated evil karma of abandoning the Dharma." Jowoje Lhachik
