When asked which is more important, benefiting sentient beings with Dharma or one's own practice, the Buddha said: For a beginner who has no realization in their own mind, even if they benefit sentient beings with Dharma, it is useless, like pouring blessings into an empty vessel, blessings will not come. Like wine brewed from unpressed dregs, the instructions have no taste or essence. For someone who has gained warmth but has not yet gained stable faith, it is impossible to work for the benefit of sentient beings, like pouring blessings into a full vase, the more one benefits others, the more one becomes empty oneself. Instructions are like a lamp passed from hand to hand, the more one illuminates others, the more one diminishes oneself. Once one has attained the ground, benefiting sentient beings will be accomplished, like blessings filling a good vase, even if one ripens all beings, one will not become empty oneself. Instructions are like the wick of a lamp, the more one illuminates others, the more one does not diminish oneself. Therefore, now in this degenerate age, each individual should not cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, the mind of enlightenment, in solitude, now is not the time to directly benefit sentient beings, but the time to protect one's own afflictions. For example, one should not cut down the sprout of a great medicinal tree, but protect it. Therefore, directly giving Dharma to sentient beings is quite difficult. If one has not practiced oneself, and preaches Dharma to others, it is of no benefit to others. Relying on preaching the Dharma to collect offerings and wealth is like what the Indian saint said, using the Dharma as a commodity to accumulate wealth. Before one's own desires are exhausted, do not rush to benefit others, one should recite and chant mantras, read the scriptures, etc., so that the white side gods and demons hear and make aspirations for liberation. At the end of water offerings and body offerings, it is sufficient to give Dharma by not doing any evil deeds, etc. When one's own desires are exhausted, do not have a moment of peace and leisure, that is the time to focus entirely on benefiting others, so do so. The gift of fearlessness and refuge is: giving refuge to sentient beings who have no refuge, giving protection to sentient beings who have no protector.

All acts of providing assistance to those without support, and especially the Blessed One has said that among all conditioned virtues, saving the lives of sentient beings is the most beneficial. Therefore, those in positions of power will prohibit the abuse of mountains and rivers, and others will also redeem sheep being led to slaughter, protect fish, insects, and bees nearing death, and diligently benefit sentient beings through various practical means. Such acts of generosity are the most important of the tantric vows. As stated in the Five Families of Vows, the vow of the Ratna family is: "Always give the four types of generosity." Second, regarding the perfection of discipline, there are three disciplines: the discipline of abstaining from negative actions, the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. First, the discipline of abstaining from negative actions is to abandon all ten non-virtuous actions that are not for the benefit of others through body, speech, and mind, as if they were poison. The discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas is to do whatever is possible to accomplish even the smallest root of virtue at all times and in all ways. Generally, worldly people often say, "Doing good is just incidental, but doing evil is anytime and anywhere." Therefore, at all times, one must examine with mindfulness and prudence. If one does not strive to adopt good and abandon evil, even in the midst of mere play, one may accumulate many serious sins. As it is said: "Do not despise small sins, thinking they are harmless. A single small spark can burn a pile of grass as big as a mountain." Similarly, at all times, if one can be mindful and aware, and practice accordingly, then immeasurable collections of virtue can also be accomplished incidentally. For example, even if there is a mani stone mound on the road, one should take off one's hat and pay respect, and walk around it clockwise. If this is done with the blessing of the Three Jewels, it will become an infallible cause for attaining perfect enlightenment. As it is said: "Do not despise small virtues, thinking they are useless. By accumulating drops of water, a large vessel will gradually be filled."
