In the presence of the venerable one (Atiśa), there came two Indian monks who abided in the twelve qualities of practice. When the venerable one spoke of the selflessness of persons, the two were very happy. But when he spoke of the selflessness of phenomena, they became frightened and said, "Please do not speak like that." When they heard the recitation of profound scriptures, they covered their ears. Therefore, the venerable one was discouraged and said, "If one does not cultivate loving-kindness and the mind of enlightenment, so that one has no faith in the profound Dharma, then relying solely on pure discipline will not get one anywhere." In the past, when the Buddha was alive, when hearing the teaching of the profound meaning of emptiness, many monks with pride of attainment vomited blood and died, and there were also legends of those who fell into hell. Therefore, one should generate faith and respect from the depths of one's heart for the profound Dharma and those who teach it. Even if one does not generate faith due to the fault of one's own narrow-mindedness, it is essential to abandon slander. Fourth, regarding the perfection of diligence, there are three types: armor-like diligence, application diligence, and insatiable diligence. First, armor-like diligence is: no matter what one hears about the biographies and activities of past great masters, as well as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the history of their practice of austerities for the sake of the Dharma, one should not be discouraged thinking, "They are Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, so they acted in that way. How could we ourselves do that?" Instead, one should think, "They attained accomplishment by acting in that way. I am also their follower, so even if I cannot surpass them, I must at least accomplish something like that." If they also needed such austerities and diligence, how much more do we, who are burdened by the weight of karma and have not fully cultivated the Dharma since beginningless time, need austerities and diligence? Therefore, now that we have obtained a human body with leisure and opportunity, met a qualified guru, received profound instructions, and have the opportunity to properly practice the true Dharma, at this time we must be willing to accept suffering, carry the heavy burden on our backs, put our body and life at stake, and abandon our flesh and blood as food, vowing from the depths of our hearts to practice the Dharma. Application diligence is: for the Dharma...

Even if one has intelligence and the intention to practice, spending one's days thinking about what to do tomorrow and the day after, and wasting one's life wanting to practice Dharma but procrastinating, these should be abandoned. As Drukpa Pema Karpo said, "Life is like livestock in a slaughterhouse; even if you escape to the mountains for a moment, you are closer to death. In this long delay of today and tomorrow, you will only cry out in despair at the end of your bed." Therefore, do not delay practicing Dharma even for a moment. Like a coward running into his mother's arms, or like a fire on a beautiful woman's head, immediately abandon all worldly affairs of this life and strive to practice Dharma immediately. If you do not do this, worldly affairs will never be finished, one after another, like ripples on water, so there will be no opportunity to practice Dharma. Resolve to abandon worldly affairs whenever you can, and that will be the time to finish them. As the Omniscient Great One said, "Worldly affairs never have a time to finish; whenever you abandon them, that is the time to finish, it is the nature of things." And, "Actions are like children's games; if you do them, you will not finish, but if you abandon them, you will finish." Therefore, when you have the intention to practice the sacred Dharma, be urged on by impermanence, and do not allow laziness and procrastination to take hold even for a moment, but immediately engage in Dharma, which is the effort of application. The effort of non-contentment is: when your retreat, recitation, virtuous deeds, etc., have made some progress, do not be content with that, but take a vow to harmonize your life and practice, and until you have attained the state of perfect enlightenment, you need continuous and strong effort like a river. As the great masters said, "When practicing Dharma, you need to be like a hungry yak eating grass." Just as a hungry yak, when biting off the previous mouthful of grass, already has its eyes on the next mouthful, so when practicing Dharma, from the beginning, plan in your mind to complete this and then practice that. Do not have any laziness or meaningless waste in body, speech, and mind, and day by day, strive to increase your effort in Dharma. As Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa said, "The closer you get to death, the more you should increase virtue.
