When asked, "Why have you come here to buy suffering?" he thought, "It seems I too have been led here by karma." Immediately, a voice came from the sky, "May whatever is bound be liberated! May whatever is liberated be bound!" As soon as the sound ceased, the wheel spun on top of his head, crushing his skull as before, causing unbearable pain and suffering. As a result, he felt intense compassion for all sentient beings like himself, thinking, "In this state of samsara, there are many sentient beings like me who suffer, treading on their mother's head. May all their suffering ripen upon me, and may I alone experience it! May all other sentient beings never experience such suffering in this and all future lives!" As he thought this, the wheel immediately rose into the sky, and he was liberated from suffering, experiencing bliss above seven palm trees. Like this, the exchange of self and others, this mind of bodhichitta, is the ultimate Dharma indispensable for accomplishing enlightenment. In the past, the virtuous spiritual friends of the Kadampa order also made this the core of their practice. In the past, Geshe Chekhawa was knowledgeable in the old and new doctrines and many treatises on valid cognition. Once, he went to visit Geshe Chakshingwa, and there was a small booklet on his pillow. When he opened it and looked inside, it said, "Give profit and victory to others, take loss and defeat upon yourself." He thought, "This seems to be a wonderful Dharma." So he asked, "How should this Dharma be practiced?" He replied, "This is Langtangpa's Eight Verses." He asked, "Who has the instructions for this?" He replied, "Geshe Langtangpa has them." Thinking to go and request it, he went to Lhasa. After staying for a few days, he wandered around. One evening, a leper who came from Langtang said, "Langtangpa has passed away." He asked, "What kind of people are the abbots?" He replied, "There are two people called Zhangzhungpa and Dodepa, and the two of them are not getting along over who will be the abbot." He said, "The two of them are not arguing over who will win or lose the position of abbot. Zhangzhungpa says, 'You are the eldest, please be the abbot.' I also Langtang

It is said that they bore the responsibility without any difference. The Sautrāntika said, "You have great qualities, please take the seat of abbot." Although the two of them were mutually purifying pure appearances, he understood it as a fault that (the other) said that he did not get along with the abbot's seat, so the Dharma disappeared because of the discord between the two. Now, when asked who was better at that instruction, everyone said that Sharawa was better. Sharawa was explaining many texts of the Pukti to about a thousand monks, but even after listening for a few days, not even a hint of the Dharma he wanted appeared. It seems that this Dharma is not here either. Thinking that if it exists, I will stay, and if it does not, I must leave, he went to Sharawa while he was circumambulating the stupa, spread out his robes, and said, "Please sit here for a moment. I have a request." Sharawa said, "Jowo, what are you hesitating about? I have already arranged all the monks in their seats." Then he said, "I have seen a Dharma, which is to: Give profit and victory to others, Take loss and defeat upon oneself. There is one thing that I find very pleasing to my mind. How profound is this Dharma?" Sharawa said, "Jowo, whether it pleases your mind or not, unless you do not want to attain Buddhahood, if you want to attain it, this Dharma is indispensable." He asked, "Does the Lama have this instruction?" Sharawa said, "Yes, that is the main point of all my practice." He said, "Then please give me this instruction." Sharawa said, "Can you stay with me for a long time? If you can, I will give it to you." Then he spent six years practicing mind training, taking it as practical instruction, and as a result, he completely eliminated the attachment to self-cherishing. Therefore, this practice of exchanging self and others, the mind of Bodhicitta, even in this life can pacify diseases and sufferings, and for subduing gods, demons, and obstacles, there is no better instruction than this. Therefore, at all times and in all circumstances, abandon this evil thought of self-cherishing like poison, and strive to cultivate the mind of Bodhicitta, exchanging self and others. Third, cultivating cherishing others more than oneself: Whether I remain in Samsara, or am born in hell, whether I am sick, or suffer, or experience any misfortune, I will endure it, but may the suffering of other sentient beings ripen upon me.
