The hell guard, enraged, said, "Who can do anything about beings acting according to their own karma?" And with that, he struck him on the head with a mallet. Through the power of good intention, he transmigrated from hell and was born in the realm of the gods. It is said that this was the first altruistic act of Shakyamuni. Similarly, in the past, when the Blessed One himself was born as the daughter of the shipmaster Friend, as soon as this thought of exchanging self and other arose in her mind, she was immediately liberated from the suffering of the lower realms. That is, in the past, there was a householder named Friend, whose sons all died as soon as they were born. Once, a son was born, and hoping that he would live, they named him Daughter. The householder went to the ocean to collect jewels, and the ship sank and he died. When the son grew up, he asked his mother what his father's lineage was. Fearing that he would go to the ocean if she told the truth, she lied and said that he was of the grain-selling lineage. So he engaged in the grain trade and earned four karshapanas each day, which he used to care for his mother. The other grain traders said, "You are not of the grain-selling lineage, and it is not proper for you to engage in the grain trade," and they stopped him. He returned and again asked his mother what his lineage was. His mother said that he was of the incense-selling lineage. Again, he engaged in the incense trade and earned eight karshapanas each day, which he used to serve his mother. The incense sellers again stopped him, so his mother said that he was of the cloth-selling lineage, and he sold cloth, earning sixteen karshapanas each day, which he gave to his mother. The cloth sellers again stopped him, so his mother said that he was of the jewel-selling lineage, and he engaged in the jewel trade, earning thirty-two karshapanas each day, which he also gave to his mother. Then the other merchants said, "You are of the lineage of those who collect jewels from the ocean, so you should engage in the work of your own lineage." He returned home and said to his mother, "It seems that I am of the jewel-collecting lineage, so I am going to the great ocean to collect jewels." His mother said, "Although you are of the jewel-collecting lineage, your father and ancestors all went to the ocean to collect jewels and died, so if you go, you will surely die. Do not go, but stay here and do business." But he did not listen to her advice and prepared all the equipment for going to the ocean. As he was leaving, his mother could not bear to let him go and held onto the hem of his garment.

Because she was holding him and crying, the son got angry and said, "I am going to the sea, and you are making it inauspicious by crying." The mother kicked him on the head, and he left, resulting in the ship sinking in the sea, and they all drowned, almost all of them dying. He grabbed a plank of wood and reached an island. There, he went to a city called "Joy," where there were beautiful and delightful houses of jewels. Four beautiful goddesses appeared and laid out silk cushions. They offered the three white things and the three sweet things, and as he was about to leave, they said, "Do not go to the south! There is a danger of a great calamity occurring." He did not listen and went, arriving at a city called "Joyful One" that was more beautiful than before. Eight beautiful girls served him as before, saying, "Do not go to the south, a calamity will occur." But he did not listen and went, arriving at a city called "Raro" that was more splendid than before. Sixteen beautiful goddesses greeted and served him, saying, "Do not go to the south, a great calamity will occur." Again, he went and saw a white castle whose peak touched the sky, which was called "Guru Brahma's Castle." When he went there, thirty-two beautiful goddesses greeted him and laid out silk cushions. They offered the three white things and the three sweet things, saying, "Stay here." But he wanted to leave, and as he was about to leave, they said, "No matter how you go, do not go to the south, a calamity will occur." However, he wanted to go to the south, so he went and at the gate of an iron castle that reached the sky, there was a black man with red eyes and a lolling tongue, holding a long iron club in his hand. He asked the man what was inside this castle, but the man said nothing. When he went closer, there were many such men. Seeing those men, he felt his flesh and hair stand on end, thinking, "The so-called calamity, the occurrence of calamity, this must be it." Thinking this, he went inside the castle and saw a man with an iron wheel spinning on his head, crushing his brains to a pulp. He asked, "What did you do?" The man replied, "I am experiencing the karmic result of kicking my mother's head. You did not enjoy the happiness of Guru Brahma's Castle."
