Furthermore, due to the influence of anger, one frequently grinds one's nails. Generally, most people nowadays think that killing lice is not sinful. However, all of this killing of lice is driven by anger, so it is undoubtedly a cause for being born in the dense hells. Therefore, one cannot even tolerate such a small amount of suffering for oneself, but in return inflicts harm and great suffering on others, which is truly shameful. All beings in the three realms also want all happiness for themselves and do not want even a single kind of suffering, just like oneself. Thus, they want happiness and do not want suffering, but they do not know how to practice the ten virtues, which are the cause of happiness. They only strive to create non-virtuous deeds, which are the cause of suffering, resulting in a complete reversal of intention and action. All these beings who are tormented by suffering, there is not one who has not been my parent since beginningless time. I am now taken care of by a qualified and holy lama, and I have entered the gate of the sacred Dharma. Because I know the difference between benefit and harm, I will lovingly protect all sentient beings, who are like my aged mothers, without any difference from myself, tolerating wrong views and biases, and cultivating equanimity towards enemies and friends. I will meditate on this again and again. At all times and in all ways, just as I desire things that are beneficial and bring happiness to myself, others also desire them in the same way. Therefore, just as I strive and exert effort to achieve my own happiness, I will also strive in the same way to achieve the happiness of others. Just as I strive to eliminate even the slightest form of suffering for myself, I will also strive to eliminate even the slightest suffering for others. Just as I am happy when I have happiness, joy, and possessions, I will rejoice from the bottom of my heart when others have happiness, joy, and possessions. In short, regarding all sentient beings in the three realms as no different from oneself, one must wholeheartedly adopt the sole method of achieving temporary and lasting happiness. When the venerable Dampa Sangye was asked by Drungba Geshe, "Please give me an instruction that is sufficient in just one sentence," the venerable replied, "Whatever you desire for yourself, others also desire in the same way, so act accordingly." Therefore, holding oneself dear and hating others

One should uproot the evil thoughts of attachment and hatred, and view self and others as equal. Second, the exchange of self and others, the mind of enlightenment: In reality, for those sentient beings who can be directly seen suffering from sickness, hunger, and thirst, or by visualizing a sentient being suffering in front of you. When your breath goes out, give them your happiness and goodness, including your body, possessions, and roots of virtue, as if covering them with a pile of clothes. When breathing in, along with the thought of taking all their sufferings upon yourself, think that they are happy and free from suffering, and gradually meditate on this giving and taking from one sentient being to all. In reality, when you encounter unpleasant things and sufferings, think like this: In the realms of the three realms of samsara, there are countless sentient beings experiencing such suffering, and they are all so pitiful. May all their suffering ripen on me, and may they all be free from suffering and have happiness, meditate like this from the bottom of your heart. When you experience happiness and joy, think: May all sentient beings be happy through my happiness. In this way, the exchange of self and others, the mind of enlightenment, is the ultimate and unerring core practice for all who have entered the Mahayana path. Even if it arises once in the continuum, it can purify the obscurations of sins of many kalpas, perfect the vast accumulation of merit and wisdom, and be liberated from the birthplaces of evil destinies and falling into evil paths. In the past, when our teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha) was born in the hell of pulling carts, he and his friend named Kamarupa were pulling the cart of hell. Because they were both weak and unable to pull the cart, the hell guards beat them with burning weapons, causing them great suffering. He (Shakyamuni Buddha) thought: Even if we both pull together, we cannot pull it and suffer equally, so it is better for me to bear the suffering alone and let him have happiness. So he said to the hell guards: Put this rope on my neck too! I will pull the cart alone.
