Therefore, in purifying sins, there is no dharma more excellent than compassion. Since the mind of enlightenment is the unmistaken cause for the arising of uncommonness in the continuum, one must strive to cultivate this compassion through various means. Cultivating compassion in this way is like a mother without arms whose son is carried away by the water. If a son of a mother without arms is carried away by the water, she will have unbearable intense suffering of love for her son. Because she has no arms, she cannot take him out of the water. Thinking, "What should I do now?" she only thinks of methods, and from the heart, unbearably, she cries out and runs. Similarly, all sentient beings of the three realms are carried away by the flood of suffering, drowning in the ocean of samsara, and unbearable compassion arises, but one does not have the power to save them from suffering. Thinking, "What should I do now?" from the depths of one's heart, one should pray and meditate to the lama and the deities. Then, the cultivation of joy is: Thinking of those who have noble lineage, power, wealth, and dominion, who are happy and comfortable in the heavenly realms, who are long-lived, have many attendants, and possess enjoyment, without competition or jealousy, wish that they may be even more endowed with the glory of higher realms, without harm, with great wisdom, and with many perfections. May other sentient beings also abide in such a state, and repeatedly cultivate joy, thinking, "How happy I would be!" First, cultivate joy by focusing on those places where it is easy to arise, such as one's own relatives and friends, who have qualities and happiness. When that arises in the continuum, then cultivate it towards those who are neutral. Then, towards all those who harm oneself, especially those who have become objects of jealousy, uproot the root of the evil thought of being unable to bear the prosperity and perfection of others, and cultivate special joy towards all aspects of happiness, and finally rest in a state without object of focus. Therefore, joy is a mind without jealousy, so one must train the mind by various means and strive so that this evil thought of jealousy does not arise in the continuum. In particular, the sons of the conquerors, the Bodhisattvas, having generated the mind of enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, may all those sentient beings attain the perfect Buddhahood of permanent bliss.
