At that time, thinking of sentient beings tormented by suffering in samsara, he wept, cultivating only compassion. Similarly, when the Venerable One (spyan snga ba) spoke of the many reasons why these two, loving-kindness and compassion, are so important, Langtangpa (glang thang ba) folded his hands and said: From this time on, I will cultivate only loving-kindness and compassion. The virtuous spiritual friend took off his hat and said three times: Very good, very good. There is nothing more excellent than compassion for purifying the sins and obscurations of one's own mind. In the past, in India, when the pure Dharma Abhidharma declined due to three instances of hostility, a Brahmin nun named Bright Morality thought: I have been born as a woman, and because of my inferior birth, I cannot propagate the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, I should unite with a man and bear children, and take on the responsibility of propagating the pure Dharma Abhidharma. So she united with a man of the royal caste and gave birth to the noble Asanga. She also united with a Brahmin and gave birth to Vasubandhu. When both sons grew up and asked about their father's profession, the mother said: You two were not born for the sake of your father's profession, but for the sake of propagating the Buddha's teachings, so study the Dharma and make the pure Dharma Abhidharma flourish. Vasubandhu then went to Saṃghabhadra in Kashmir to study Abhidharma. Asanga went to Kukkutapadagiri, thinking that he must see Maitreya Buddha and receive teachings, so he practiced the Maitreya Dharma. For six years he practiced diligently, but he did not even have a good dream. So he thought that it seemed impossible to achieve, and feeling discouraged, he left. On the road, he saw a man wiping a large iron rod with a soft cloth. He asked: What are you doing wiping this iron rod like this? The man said: I don't have a needle, so I want to grind this iron rod down to make a needle. Asanga thought: How long will it take for this thick iron rod to be worn down into a needle by this soft cloth? Even if it can be worn down, will he still be alive at that time? Worldly people put so much effort into meaningless tasks, and compared to that, I have been so lacking in perseverance in practicing the pure Dharma. So he returned and practiced for another three years, but still...

Not even a single sign appeared. Now, thinking that it seemed impossible to succeed, he left. Again, on a certain road, near a large rock mountain that reached the sky, a person was dipping a bird feather in water and wiping the rock. He asked, "What are you doing?" He said, "This rock is too high, and my house is to the west of this rock, so the sun doesn't shine on it. Therefore, I am wearing down this rock until it is gone." He thought in his heart as before, and returned to practice for three years, but not even a good dream appeared, so he became discouraged, thinking that it was impossible to succeed, and left. On a certain road, there was a female dog with two lame legs, whose entire lower body was infested with worms, but still she generated hatred towards others, and her upper body lunged at him, dragging her lower body, as if trying to catch him. He felt an intense and unbearable compassion. He wanted to cut off the flesh of his own body and give it to her, and to remove the worms from her lower body, but he feared that removing them with his hands would kill the worms. He thought that he had to remove these worms by licking them with his tongue, but seeing that the dog's entire body was rotten and filled with pus, he could not touch it with his tongue even though he saw it, so he closed his eyes and extended his tongue. His tongue did not touch the dog's corpse, but touched the ground. When he opened his eyes and looked, the dog's corpse was gone, and the noble Maitreya Buddha was sitting there with a halo of light. He asked, "Your compassion is so small, why did you not show your face until now?" (Maitreya Buddha) said, "It is not that I did not show you my face, I and you have never been separated, but because your sins and obscurations were too great, you could not see me. Because you practiced for twelve years, your sins and obscurations were slightly lessened, so you saw the female dog. Now, because you have generated great compassion, all the remaining obscurations have been purified, so you have truly seen me. Now, if you do not believe, put me on your shoulder and show me to everyone." Asanga put Maitreya Buddha on his right shoulder, went to the market, and said to everyone, "What is on my shoulder?" Everyone said, "There is nothing." An old woman whose karmic imprints were slightly lighter said, "There is a rotten dog corpse on your shoulder." Then Asanga, the protector Maitreya, took him to Tushita heaven, showed him the Five Treatises of Maitreya, and then returned to the human realm and propagated the Mahayana teachings.
