I place the harming demon on the other side, and generate hatred towards it, shouting "Kill! Kill!" and "Beat! Beat!" while making gestures of striking. Considering the harming ghost or spirit as something to be killed and beaten is also because one is controlled by the attachment and hatred of one's own mindstream, and has not generated equal great compassion. Now, upon careful examination, the harming entity is more pitiable than the benefactor. The harming ghost or spirit is driven by negative karma, and is born into a miserable preta body. They experience immeasurable sickness and fear, and are always subjected to hunger, thirst, and fatigue. All appearances arise as suspicion, and because their minds are filled with hatred and cruelty, many fall into hell immediately after death. Who is more pitiable than them? Although the benefactor may experience sickness and pain, it only exhausts negative karma and does not accumulate new negative karma. The harming entity, by harming others with evil thoughts, causes the causes of negative karma to be thrown into the depths of the lower realms. Therefore, the Victorious Ones, who are skillful in means and possess great compassion, spoke of expelling and threatening ghosts and spirits through forceful and manifest actions, also because they pity the ghosts and spirits themselves. For example, just as a mother beats a small child who does not listen. If one can cut off the stream of negative karma of beings who only indulge in sin and non-virtue, and transfer their consciousness to a pure land, then performing wrathful actions is permissible. However, to place benefactors and sangha members on one's own side and be attached to them; to place ghosts and harming entities on the other side and hate them; how could the Victorious Ones teach a method of protecting one's own side and striking the other side based on the power of attachment and hatred? If one possesses such a mind of attachment and hatred, even if one expels and beats those ghostly mental forms, they will not listen and will instead harm oneself. Let alone those with attachment and hatred. Even if one only has the thought of wanting the ghosts to leave, one cannot subdue them. In the past, when Jetsun Milarepa was staying at Chonglung Khyungi Dzong, the king of obstacles, Vinayaka, manifested miraculous powers, and five corpses of Acharyas (practitioners) swollen like tents remained in the room. Even though he prayed to the lama and yidam, they did not leave. He meditated on the generation stage of the yidam and performed wrathful

When recitations and prayers also failed to drive them away, my teacher Lhodrak Marpa introduced me to all appearances and existence as mind, and introduced the nature of mind as luminous emptiness. Therefore, he thought it was pointless to regard demons and obstacles as external and try to drive them away. He developed a firm conviction of seeing gods and demons as self-manifestations, and entered into them. They were all frightened, their eyes darting around, and they disappeared. Similarly, in the Song of the Rock Demoness, it says: Actually, the habitual demons arise from the mind. If you do not understand the nature of the mind, even if you say, "Go away!" I will not go. If you do not realize that your own mind is emptiness, I, the demon, am nothing; there are other demons as well. If you recognize your own mind, unfavorable conditions will appear as friends. I, the Rock Demoness, will also be your servant. As this song says, if you do not have the firm conviction of seeing gods and demons as your own mind, how can you subdue the gods and demons of hatred? Similarly, when he went to the patron's house, no matter how many sheep the patron slaughtered to entertain him, he would happily partake without the slightest hesitation. In particular, when performing protections and offerings, they would say that pure meat was needed. They consider freshly slaughtered, steaming raw meat, fat, and blood to be pure. They use these to adorn the tormas and all the offerings, acting grand and imposing. This might be acceptable for a religion like Bon or the Tirthikas, but it is not a Buddhist religion. If it is a Buddhist religion, one should take refuge in the Dharma and abandon harming sentient beings. But wherever they go, they harm and kill one sentient being's life. How can enjoying meat and blood not contradict taking refuge? In particular, in the practice of the Mahayana Bodhisattva, one must be the refuge and protector of all limitless sentient beings. But towards those wretched sentient beings who should be protected, there is not even a hair's breadth of compassion. They slaughter the sentient beings who should be protected and cook their meat and blood. When these are placed before the protector Bodhisattva, he happily enjoys them with a "crunch, crunch" sound. What could be more excessive and deplorable than this? In the tantric Vajrayana scriptures, it says: If the meat and blood offerings are not properly prepared according to the scriptures, Simha Jhāṃ Bhin will...
