Thinking of them as my own relatives, parents, etc., strive to cultivate compassion. Ultimately, all beings in the three realms are pervaded by sentient beings like the sky, and where sentient beings pervade, it is pervaded by evil deeds and suffering. These beings who only experience evil deeds and suffering are truly pitiful. May they all be free from the karmic appearances, suffering, and habitual tendencies of the six realms, and attain the perfect Buddhahood of permanent bliss. Meditate on this from the depths of your heart. When cultivating compassion in this way, in the initial stage, take any one sentient being who is afflicted by suffering as the object and focus on meditating on that. Then, like the holy ones, train your mind, and if you do not eventually cultivate compassion universally for all sentient beings, then the cultivation of compassion will become vague and meaningless. In particular, when you see the suffering and hardship of the cattle, sheep, packhorses, etc., that you rely on, cultivate compassion. However, now many of us inflict various hell-like tortures on our domestic animals, such as piercing their noses, cutting off their limbs, plucking their wool, and drawing live blood, without even thinking that they have suffering. If you think about it carefully, this is the fault of not cultivating compassion. If you think about it carefully, now if we pull out a single hair from our own head, we will shout "Ouch, ouch!" and feel unbearable pain. Similarly, for those livestock, all the hair on their bodies is clamped and pulled out with force, leaving bare red marks, with drops of blood dripping from the root of each hair. They groan from the pain and suffering, but we do not think that they have suffering. Yet, we cannot bear to have a blister on our own hand. Similarly, when riding a horse or carrying a load, even when our own buttocks hurt and we cannot sit on the saddle, and we have to hold on to stay seated, we do not think that the horse or pack animal has any hardship or suffering. Even when they cannot walk, are panting, and are walking with difficulty, we still think that they are deliberately being bad and not walking, so we become angry and beat them, instead of generating compassion for them.

Even for a moment, happiness does not arise. Especially when slaughtering sheep and other livestock, when first catching one from a large flock, the fear it experiences is unimaginable. The place where it is first caught will have blood clots in the meat. Afterwards, its body is turned upside down, its limbs are tightly bound, its mouth is wrapped with rope, and the circulation of breath is cut off. While experiencing intense suffering, if death is slightly delayed, the butcher will become extremely hateful towards the poor animal, saying that this fellow won't die, and then proceed to beat it. Immediately after death, its skin is peeled off and its entrails are removed. Immediately afterwards, blood is drawn from another ox, causing it to stagger and be unable to stand. Mixing the dead blood and the living blood, they cook and eat the entrails of the previously killed animal, which is truly the demon of karma. Now, if we think carefully, looking at the suffering of those animals, what would it be like to meditate that we are them? Cover your own mouth with your hand, hold your breath for a while, and feel what kind of pain and fear that is. After observing carefully in this way, feel compassion for all beings who are subjected to such intense suffering. Repeatedly contemplate, how wonderful it would be if I had the power to save them from all these forms of suffering. In particular, those lamas and monks who should be the lords of loving-kindness and compassion, if they have no compassion for sentient beings and instead cause them suffering, even more so than laypeople, this is a sign that the Buddha's teachings are coming to an end, and that the time has come when meat-eaters and demons are being revered as objects of offering. In the past, our teacher Shakyamuni Buddha also abandoned the kingdom of a universal monarch like spitting out saliva, and then renounced. All the assembled Arhats carried bowls and staffs and went on foot for alms, let alone riding horses and mules. The Blessed One himself did not even have a mount to ride, because he thought that causing suffering to sentient beings was not the doctrine of Buddhism, so he did not ride. The Blessed One's methods
