He said, "He is now the king in Tibet, go there." When the two of them came to Tibet, behind the iron wall of Lhasa, they saw many people being killed and imprisoned, and asked, "What are these?" They said, "The king has passed judgment." The king did not seem to be Avalokiteśvara. We two might also face heavier punishment, it is better to escape. The king knew that the two of them had escaped, and sent someone to call them to his presence. The king said, "You two do not need to be afraid. The wild Tibetans are difficult to tame, so the punishments of killing and cutting that I have imposed are all illusions. In reality, I have not harmed a single sentient being, not even the size of a pore." He ruled the kingdom of snowy Tibet and brought the four kings of the directions under his rule. He pacified all the border armies and guarded the borders of the four directions. Even if it is necessary to carry out such a vast undertaking of subduing enemies and protecting relatives, if one does not harm even a pore of a single sentient being, then how is it possible that we, who now rule over a home like a wretched insect nest, can avoid harming sentient beings? Harming sentient beings will cause retribution to return to oneself, leading to endless suffering in this life and the next. Even in this life alone, there will be no benefit. Killing requires paying with one's life, stealing requires compensation, and apart from wasting one's own wealth and enjoyment, there is no one who relies on these to achieve enjoyment. Therefore, immeasurable love is like a mother bird feeding her chicks. When a mother bird feeds her chicks, she first makes the nest soft and comfortable, then covers it with her wings, keeps it warm, and all her actions are very gentle, until the chicks fly away. Similarly, we must learn to love all sentient beings in the three realms with our body, speech, and mind. Next is the practice of compassion, which is to focus on a sentient being tormented by intense suffering, wishing that they be free from the state of suffering. For example, a criminal imprisoned in a dungeon, ultimately facing the danger of execution, or a livestock facing death in front of a butcher, imagine such a sentient being tormented by intense suffering.

Thus, cultivate the perception of mother and child towards the object of affection. As it is said, for example, when seeing a heinous prisoner being led to the execution ground by the king, or a sheep being seized and tied up by a butcher, abandon the thought that 'these are other sentient beings.' Instead, contemplate, 'What would I do if that were me?' Put yourself in the place of the sentient being experiencing suffering, and consider that it is yourself. What to do now? There is no place to escape or hide, no refuge or protection. Unable to flee, unable to fly, unable to resist with strength or arms. Now, in this very instant, I must part with all the appearances of this life, even leaving behind this body that I have cherished. I must go on the great path of the next life. How wretched! Take their suffering upon yourself and train your mind. Or, when seeing a sheep being led to slaughter, think, 'What would I do if that were my old mother?' Abandon the thought that it is a sheep, and from the depths of your heart, contemplate that it is your own old mother. My old mother has no fault whatsoever, yet others are killing her like this. What to do? What kind of suffering is my old mother experiencing? From the depths of your heart, take it upon yourself. Then, when a heartfelt love arises, wishing that your old mother would immediately be freed from the suffering of being slaughtered by the butcher, think like this: Even if these beings suffering now are not my parents in this life, they are certainly my parents from countless lifetimes. Having been my parents, they have cared for me with great kindness, just like my parents in this life, and there is no difference between them and my current parents. How pitiful are these parents who are tormented by such intense suffering! How wonderful it would be if they could be freed from this suffering right now, immediately, in this very instant! Cultivate intense compassion, unbearable and tearful. If compassion arises in this way, then experiencing such suffering is the result of having committed non-virtuous deeds in the past. Those who are now engaging in non-virtuous actions will certainly experience such suffering in the future. How pitiful! Thus, focus on the actions that cause suffering, such as killing, and cultivate compassion. Then, focus on the suffering of beings born in hells and as hungry ghosts, etc.
