Not at all. Previously, Padmasambhava and I, along with the great Dharma King Bodhisattva, were born as three sons of evil lineage. When the great stupa Jarung Khashor was being built, this goddess took the form of a small bee. When she fled into the king's hat, the king unintentionally swatted the bee to death with his hand. At that time, due to the karmic debt of life, she was born as your daughter. If Dharma King Trisong Detsen, the very embodiment of Manjushri, had such a karmic offspring, what need is there to speak of others? Therefore, now we are connected as parents and descendants, generating unimaginable love and desire. If they experience suffering and misfortune, the sorrow we feel is greater than if we ourselves were to suffer. These are all due to the karmic cycle of harm caused to one another in the past. Those who have now become our enemies, in previous lives, there is not one who has not been our parent. Even now, even if we regard an enemy as an enemy, there is no certainty that they will harm us. Because even if we regard them as enemies, they may not regard us as enemies in return; and even if they regard us as enemies, they may not be able to harm us. Even if they cause immediate harm, it may increase our fame in this life, or lead us to encounter the sacred Dharma, ultimately transforming into ultimate benefit and happiness. If we use our own methods, accord with their minds, and gently persuade them with gentle words, it is not difficult to make them into friends. Similarly, even those whom we now regard as relatives, there are cases where sons deceive or even kill their parents. They may unite with adversaries who are not in harmony with us, take their side, compete for property, and incite disputes, and so on. If they appear to be in harmony, then when they experience suffering and misfortune, we will experience suffering even greater than if we ourselves were to suffer. For the sake of relatives and children, we will accumulate vast amounts of sin, and after death, we will be cast into hell. Even if we wish to practice the true Dharma, they will hinder us. Because we cannot let go of parents and descendants, the Dharma is postponed, and there is no time to practice, and so on, causing harm even greater than that of enemies.

Similarly, for future lives and even further into the future, these beings whom you now consider enemies will not necessarily be born as your descendants, and relatives will not necessarily be born as enemies. Therefore, if you cling to the momentary appearance of enemies and friends as real, thereby accumulating negative karma through attachment and aversion, and making yourself a stepping stone to falling into the lower realms, what is the point of that? Therefore, you should cultivate a sense of closeness towards all limitless sentient beings, like parents and children, and like the great masters of the past, view enemies and friends with equanimity. Think in this way. First, towards those objects that are extremely displeasing to your mind and easily arouse anger and hatred, diligently train in ways to not generate anger and hatred through various methods, and then be equanimous with those neutral beings who are neither helpful nor harmful to you. After that, contemplate that these neutral beings have been your parents countless times since beginningless time, and generate love and affection for them as if they were your actual parents in this life, and continuously train and meditate. Finally, towards all sentient beings who appear as enemies, friends, or neutral, generate unfeigned compassion as if they were your parents in this life, and continuously meditate. If you cannot do this, even if you naturally do not generate compassion or hatred towards enemies and friends, but merely maintain a state of calmness, that is just useless and harmless ignorant indifference, and cannot be considered immeasurable equanimity. Therefore, immeasurable equanimity is like a righteous person hosting guests. For example, when righteous people host guests, they treat everyone equally, regardless of their status, quality, or rank. Similarly, all sentient beings pervading the sky should be equally regarded as objects of great compassion, and you should continuously train until you reach this state. After that, cultivating loving-kindness is like this: After cultivating immeasurable equanimity, regard all sentient beings of the three realms as equal objects of great loving-kindness, and focus on all those beings. For example, when parents raise young children, even if the child is disobedient, they disregard all hardships and focus solely on how to make the child happy, comfortable, and content, and diligently strive in body, speech, and mind.
