Is it really the case that due to poverty, one cannot find an old horse to ride? Nowadays, when some of our monks go to villages for rituals, they pierce the nose of an old yak with a rough rope, then ride on its back, pulling the rope with both hands, dragging it into the nose. When the old yak, unable to bear the pain in its nose, starts to spin around, they lash it with a whip. When it runs because it cannot bear the pain of being whipped, they pull its nose again. When it stops again because it cannot bear the pain in its nose, they whip it again. This goes on alternately, causing the body to become exhausted and suffer greatly. Sweat drips from every pore. The tongue is almost dragging on the ground, unable to walk, only able to make heavy panting sounds. At this point, they still become angry, thinking, 'Why is this fellow still not walking properly?' So they strike it violently with the handle of the whip. Because of the anger, they exert too much force, and the whip breaks into two pieces. They tuck the broken whip into their waist, pick up a stone spear, turn around from the saddle, and go along beating the old yak's rump, without the slightest compassion in their hearts. Only then do they realize that they are that old yak. They make it carry an unbearable burden on its back, pull it with a nose rope, whip it, and strike its ribs with a large stick, causing pain in all directions, front, back, left, and right, without a moment's rest, having to climb steep slopes, descend dangerous inclines, cross rushing rivers, and walk across vast plains. Without time to eat a single bite of food, from dawn until sunset, they are forced to go against their will. What kind of hardship and exhaustion would that entail? What kind of pain and hunger would they experience? If one could put oneself in their place and feel these sufferings, it would be impossible not to generate intense compassion. Similarly, in general, the so-called lamas and monks, who are supposed to be the impartial protectors, saviors, lords, and supports of all sentient beings, instead favor those patrons who provide them with food and offerings, saying to them, 'Protect me, save me,' and giving them empowerments and blessings. Those pretas (hungry ghosts) who have taken on wretched bodies due to the force of their negative karma
