Those that were not split open were pulled out from between the fingernails and toenails, causing all the joints of the body to be stretched, resulting in unbearable pain and suffering, and the lama disappeared. After a few days, the lama came and from the places where the bamboo sticks had been removed, much blood and pus, etc., flowed out. Again, he blessed him and took him away. One day, Naropa said, "I am hungry. Go and beg for some food." Many people who were working in the fields were at the place where they were eating, and he went to beg, and they gave him a bowl full of cooked soup. He came back and offered it to the lama, who seemed to enjoy it very much. He showed a very pleased expression. Naropa thought to himself, "I have served the lama so much before, but I have never made him so happy as this time. If I go to beg again, perhaps I can get some more," so he took the bowl and went again. They had all gone to work, and the leftovers of the soup were left there. He thought, "Now, it would be better to steal this," so he took it and ran away, but they saw him. They chased after him, caught him, and beat him half to death. He suffered immeasurable pain and was unable to get up for many days. Again, the lama came, blessed him, and took him away. One day, Naropa said, "I need a lot of wealth, go and steal it." He went to steal from a rich man's house, but he was discovered, caught, and beaten half to death again. After a few days, the lama came and asked, "Are you well?" He replied as before. He blessed him and took him away again, and so on. Like this, there were twelve great hardships. Twelve minor hardships, and twenty-four different kinds of hardships, were endured on one body. Thus, all the hardships were completed, and one day, Naropa, he said, "Go and fetch some water, and I will light a fire and wait." When Naropa came back with the water, he was fanning the fire. He stood up and grabbed Naropa by the throat with his left hand, and said, "Naropa, show me your skull." He took off his shoe with his right hand and hit him on the forehead, and Naropa fainted instantly. When he regained consciousness, all the qualities of the lama's mindstream arose in Naropa's mindstream, and the minds of the guru and disciple became inseparable. Thus, the twenty-four hardships endured by the great scholar Naropa were in fact the instructions of the lama.

Therefore, this became a method for purifying obscurations. Apart from the meaningless toil of form and self-nature, no one thought this was Dharma, and the guru did not utter a single word of Dharma. The disciples did not practice the Dharma like searching for a single stone, but they met the guru of the accomplished ones. They overcame difficulties and practiced according to the guru's instructions, and thus, through the power of purifying obscurations, realization arose in their continuums. Therefore, apart from practicing according to the guru's instructions, there is no other Dharma practice. Merely following the guru's instructions has great benefits. Similarly, even a slight deviation from the guru's instructions is a particularly serious fault. Again, on one occasion, Tilopa told Naropa, "Do not take on the responsibility of being the gatekeeper pandita of Vikramashila." Later, when he went to the U-Tsang region, he encountered the situation where the gatekeeper pandita of Vikramashila had passed away. Everyone said, "There is no one else who can debate with the heretics." Therefore, they earnestly requested him to serve as the gatekeeper pandita of the northern gate. He served as the gatekeeper of the northern gate and debated with a heretic, but after debating for many days, he could not defeat the heretic. He prayed to the guru, and one day, Tilopa suddenly appeared before him. He said, "You are too late, I should have come earlier." Tilopa said, "Didn't I tell you not to be a gatekeeper pandita? Now, visualize me on your crown and point the threatening mudra at the heretic and debate with him." He did as he was told, and Naropa was victorious, completely defeating all the heretical debates. Similarly, the story of how Jetsun Milarepa relied on Lhodrak Marpa is as follows: In the Gungthang region of Ngari, there was a wealthy man named Mila Sherab Gyaltsen who had a son and a daughter. The son was named Mila Thöpa Ga, who is Jetsun Mila. When the siblings were young, their father passed away. All the wealth was stolen by their uncle Yungdrung Gyaltsen. The three of them, mother and children, had no food or wealth and experienced much suffering. They learned magic and hail from Yungton Trogyal of Tsang and Lhaje Nupchung, and killed thirty-five people, including the uncle's son and daughter-in-law, under the hail. All the villagers hated him.
