In general, although it is necessary to have all the qualities mentioned in the sutras and tantras, it is especially necessary to have a mind of bodhicitta in one's continuum. In short, all the examinations are included in this one examination of whether or not one has bodhicitta. If the mindstream is endowed with bodhicitta, then whatever is beneficial to the disciple in this life and the next will be done, and it will not be meaningless. The Dharma taught by that lama is also connected to the Mahayana path, so it will definitely go on the right path. If one does not have bodhicitta, the lama will have selfish prejudices, and the disciple's mindstream will not be well subdued. No matter how profound and wonderful the Dharma taught may seem, it will ultimately be lost for the sake of this worldly life alone. Therefore, all the key points of examining a lama are included here, so if the mindstream is filled with bodhicitta, then no matter what the appearance is, one should rely on him. As for those who are devoid of bodhicitta, even if they appear to have renunciation, remorse, practice, conduct, etc., no matter how good they may seem, they should not be relied upon. However, we ordinary people cannot know the uncommon qualities of those holy beings who keep their own qualities hidden, no matter how much we examine them. Moreover, even ordinary people who are deceitful and cunning are skilled at deceiving with pretense, so there are also those who appear to be holy. Therefore, the lama with whom one has a connection from one's previous lives is the most important. That is, merely seeing the face of that lama, hearing his voice, or even just hearing his name, can arouse faith that makes the hair stand on end, and can immediately transform one's perception. Such a person is one's lama from previous lives, so there is no need to examine him. In the past, Rongton Lhaje Jetsun Milarepa said, "Your lama from previous lives is in the monastery of Lho Drobo Lung, and there is a noble being called Marpa Lotsawa, the king of translators, so go there." When he said this, just hearing the name of Marpa, Jetsun generated extraordinary faith from the depths of his heart, and thought that even if it cost him his life, he must see the face of that lama and be taken care of by him. When he came to see the lama, Marpa was plowing the field like a farmer, and Jetsun...

When going to visit (the Lama) and meeting him on the road, even if one does not know whether he is a true Lama, (that person) said that the phenomena of this life suddenly stopped, becoming empty. In general, the Lama is also given by one's own pure and impure appearances and karma, therefore, no matter what the Lama who has received the kindness of one's own Dharma and instructions is like, one must not be separated from the idea of seeing him as a real Buddha. If one does not have the karmic connection, one will not have the opportunity to meet a good Lama; if one's own appearance is not pure, even if one meets a real Buddha, one will not be able to see him as having qualities, therefore, the Lama whom one meets and receives kindness from due to the influence of one's own past karma is the most important. In the middle, when relying on the Lama, one must also endure all hardships such as cold, hunger, and thirst, and act according to the Lama's words. Pray with devotion and respect. Immediately report all one's actions to the Lama, and practice according to the teachings given by that holy being. One must rely on him with unwavering faith. Finally, there is the practice of learning the Lama's intentions and actions, that is, after carefully observing all the actions of the Lama, one should practice in the same way. There is also a saying in worldly language: all actions are imitation, and who is the most skilled in imitation. In general, practicing the Dharma is also imitating the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past. A disciple relying on the Lama is also learning from the Lama, therefore, one must integrate the Lama's intentions and actions into one's own mindstream. For example, a disciple relying on the Lama is like something coming out of a carved bowl, just as whatever pattern is on the carved bowl, that pattern is fully revealed, one must be like the Lama, having as many qualities as there are in the Lama's mindstream, and even if one cannot be exactly the same, one must have something similar. Therefore, first one must be good at examining the Lama, in the middle one must be good at relying on the Lama, and finally one must be good at learning the Lama's intentions and actions, such a person will definitely go on the right path, that is: first be good at examining the Lama, in the middle be good at relying on the Lama, and finally be good at learning the Lama's intentions and actions, such a person will go on the right path. Therefore, after finding a supreme spiritual friend who possesses all the qualities, when relying on him
