In any situation, even a small amount of material assistance, or physical and verbal labor, or even just mental rejoicing and praise, can be equal to the merit generated by the supreme aspiration of the holy one. Previously, there were two people going to U-Tsang (དབུས་གཙང་, present-day Tibet Autonomous Region), one of whom had only a little pea flour and some barley. He mixed that little pea flour into the tsampa of the other person who had a lot of fine tsampa. After a few days, the person with a lot of tsampa said to the other person, "Your tsampa should be finished, right? Let's see how much is left." As a result, it was found that the pea flour was not finished yet. Like this, after looking many times, the pea flour was not finished, so they had to eat all the tsampa together. Similarly, for any good deeds that others do, even if you only participate slightly in material or physical ways, you can share in that merit. In particular, for the Guru and spiritual friend, even temporary errands, running errands, or even just cleaning the room, will not deviate from the path of accumulation, so you must do your best. You must enter the practice of the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life." "The holy one's excellent accumulation of merit and wisdom, in which to practice benefiting, errands, running errands, sweeping, etc., diligent and fruitful is the supreme path of accumulation." So it is said. The supreme field of merit for all refuge and accumulation of merit is none other than the Guru. In particular, when the Guru is giving empowerment and teaching the Dharma, the compassion and blessings of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the three times and ten directions enter into the Guru, and the Guru abides inseparably from all Buddhas. Therefore, offering hundreds and thousands of riches at other times is not as meritorious as offering a mouthful of food at that time. All deity visualizations of the generation stage, although appearing as various deities, their essence is inseparable from one's own root Guru. If you recognize this, you can quickly receive blessings. All the wisdom of the completion stage arises in the continuum, also relying on the power of the Guru's devotion and blessings. Because the wisdom of realizing the nature of mind arises in one's own continuum, therefore the generation stage and completion stage of the path

Because the Lama himself embodies the essence of all attainments in all practices, all Sutras and Tantras state that the Lama is the actual Buddha. Why? The field of refuge and accumulation, the inner and outer yogas of Lama practice, the essence of the attainments of generation and completion stages are all gathered here. Therefore, all Sutras and Tantras teach that the Lama is the Buddha himself. Thus it is said. Therefore, the noble Lama, although his mind abides inseparably from all Buddhas, in order to guide us impure beings to be tamed, he manifests in the form of a human being and actually abides at this time. We must strive to become inseparable in mind with the Lama by accomplishing whatever he says and serving him in three ways. If not, when the Lama is actually present, without offering service and respect, without acting according to his words, and when the Lama is not present, drawing his image and saying that we are meditating, saying that we are meditating on reality, but seeking profound things elsewhere, and not cultivating devotion and prayers to transfer the qualities of abandonment and realization from the Lama's mind-stream to our own, these are called contradictory to practice and what is to be practiced. The appearance of seeing the Lama's face and being guided on the path in the Bardo is also due to the combination of our own immeasurable devotion and the power of the Lama's compassion and aspirations. In reality, the Lama does not actually come there. Therefore, if we do not have devotion, no matter how good the Lama is, he will not guide us on the path in the Bardo. Most of the deluded draw the Lama's image and meditate, but when the Lama is actually present, they do not offer service. They say they are meditating on reality but do not understand the Lama's mind. How pitiful it is to contradict practice and what is to be practiced! It is strange to say that we see the Lama in the Bardo without devotion! Thus it is said. First, examine the Lama with skill. Before receiving empowerment and Dharma connection, examine him well. If the Lama has all the qualities, rely on him. If not, do not rely on him. Once you have relied on the Lama, you must think only of his qualities, seeing everything he does as good, and cultivate faith and pure perception. If you criticize his faults, countless faults will arise. The Lama should be examined.
