Like a craftsman's stool, enduring both heat and cold. Listening to instructions like a servant, abandoning pride like a broom, forsaking arrogance like a bull with broken horns. The scriptures say to rely on the Lama. Thus it is. Pleasing the Lama through three kinds of service: The best is offering through practice, which means practicing all the Dharma taught by the Lama with hardship and diligence. The intermediate is service through body and speech, using one's body, speech, and mind as servants of the Lama. The lowest is offering material goods, pleasing the Lama through generosity in giving wealth, food, and possessions. If you are wealthy, offer to the Fourth Jewel (the Lama). Service is the work of employing body and speech, and all of it is never wasted. Among the three ways of pleasing, practice is the best. Thus it is. No matter how uncertain the Lama's actions may seem, understand them as skillful means and maintain pure perception. Once, when the great scholar and accomplished master Naropa was residing, the deity said: Your Lama in all lifetimes is the supreme Tilopa, go to the east of India. He immediately set out and went to the east, but could not find where Tilopa was staying. When he asked the people of that place, they said they did not know. When he asked if there was anyone called Tilopa in this place, they said: There is a crazy Tilopa, a beggar Tilopa. Thinking that the actions of accomplished ones are uncertain, it might be him. So he asked: Where is that beggar Tilopa? They said: Over there by the wall, where the smoke is coming from. When he went there, Tilopa had a bowl full of dead and alive fish in front of him. He picked up a fish, roasted it over the fire, and ate it while playing a hand drum. Naropa prostrated and asked to be accepted as a disciple. Tilopa said: What are you saying? I am a beggar. Naropa repeatedly requested, and Tilopa accepted him. Such actions were not because Tilopa was hungry and could not find food, but because those fish were ignorant and evil beings who did not know what to accept and reject, and he had the power to liberate them. So he ate the fish and transferred their consciousness to a pure realm. Similarly, Saraha was an archer.

And Shavaripa the hunter, etc., most of the accomplished masters of the holy land of India were in extremely low states such as outcastes, so one should not have wrong views on any behavior, but should practice pure appearance. One should not have wrong views on any behavior, because: Most of the masters of the holy land are in the ordinary state of outcastes, mediocre people, and evil deeds, even more degraded than degradation. So it is said. If it is not like that, but one examines faults with wrong views, then one will see the faults of the Buddha even if one stays with him for a long time. Like this, even the Buddha will be seen as having faults. In the past, the brother of the Bhagavan, a monk named Legpai Karmai (Good Star), served the Bhagavan for twenty-four years. Although he could explain the twelve divisions of the scriptures from memory, he saw all the deeds of the Thubpa (Sage) as deceitful. Except for the difference that the light was a fathom long, he thought that we two were the same, and unbearable wrong thoughts arose. For twenty-four years I have been your servant, from the body with a fathom of light, I have not seen a sesame seed of merit, I will not serve someone who is as proficient in Dharma as I am. He said and left. Then, the Bhagavan's attendant Kungawo asked where Legpai Karma would be reborn. The Bhagavan said: Legpai Karma will die in seven days and be reborn as a hungry ghost in the flower garden. Kungawo went to Legkar and told him that the Bhagavan had said so. Legkar thought that sometimes his lies would come true, so he was careful for seven days. After seven days, he thought that he should blame him, so he did not eat for seven days. On the morning of the seventh day, he was thirsty, so he drank some water, but the water did not digest and he died, and was reborn in the flower garden as an ugly hungry ghost adorned with nine ugly characteristics. Therefore, if one sees faults in the actions of the holy lama, then one is blaming oneself, our own mind's eye is impure, his actions have no fault or sin at all, one should especially generate faith and pure appearance. Therefore, before one's own proximate cause is not controlled, the fault of examining mistakes is immeasurable, the scripture treasury.
