Having found a complete lama, one should not separate from the perception of the lama as the actual Buddha. Because, such a lama who is complete with all qualities is the embodiment of the compassion and wisdom of all the Buddhas of the ten directions, merely appearing in human form for the sake of taming sentient beings. As it is said: 'The lama who is complete with all qualities is the essence of the compassion and wisdom of all Buddhas, appearing in the form of a person in the realm of those to be tamed, the supreme root of all accomplishments.' Such a noble lama, in order to guide sentient beings through skillful means, may appear to have temporary actions and so on that are similar to ordinary people, but in the ultimate sense, his intention abides in Buddhahood, so he differs from all others. Any action is solely motivated by the intention to accord with the dispositions of those to be tamed, so he is superior to all. He is skilled in cutting through doubts, and endures all the wrongdoings and weariness of his disciples, like a mother to her only child. As it is said: 'In the sense of guidance, he is similar to all, but in the true sense, he differs from all. Because he has profound intentions, he is superior to all, skilled in cutting through doubts, and endures wrongdoing and weariness.' Such a lama who possesses all qualities is like a great ship that ferries across the great ocean of samsara, like a helmsman who unerringly shows the path to liberation and omniscience, like a rain of nectar that extinguishes the blazing fire of karma and afflictions, like the sun and moon that dispel the thick darkness of ignorance and bring forth the light of Dharma, like the earth that endures wrongdoing and weariness and has a great capacity for view and conduct, like a wish-fulfilling tree that is the source of all the qualities of benefit in this life and happiness in the next, like a good vase that has become a treasury of all desires, with countless varieties of vehicles and tenets, like a wish-fulfilling jewel that abides as the source of the ocean of the four activities, fulfilling whatever one desires, like loving parents who are impartial, without attachment or aversion, to all limitless sentient beings, vast in scope because they are focused on sentient beings as vast as the expanse of the sky, and like the water of compassion that arises especially quickly for suffering, helpless sentient beings.

Like a river. Joy that is not moved by jealousy, like the king of mountains that is not shaken by the wind of clinging. Equanimity that is not disturbed by attachment and aversion is like a rain cloud. It is the great ship that liberates from the ocean of existence, the true helmsman who does not stray from the supreme path. It is the rain of nectar that destroys the masses of karma and affliction, like the sun and moon that dispel the darkness of ignorance. Because of its vast vehicle, it is like the earth, the source of benefit and happiness, like the wish-fulfilling tree, the excellent vase that possesses the treasure of Dharma, surpassing even the wish-fulfilling jewel that produces all. It is like parents because it loves all beings equally, great and swift compassion is like a river, unwavering joy is like the king of mountains, undisturbed equanimity is like a rain cloud. Thus it is said. Such a lama, in terms of compassion and blessing, is no different from all the Buddhas, a good connection leads to enlightenment in one lifetime, and a bad connection leads to endless wandering in samsara, therefore, such a lama is no different from all the Buddhas. Even if harm is done, if a connection to the path of happiness is made, for the person who relies on with unfeigned faith, the qualities of higher realms and definite goodness will fall like rain. Thus it is said. In the meantime, the way to rely on a lama is as stated in the Ornament of the Tree: "Son of lineage, you should generate the perception that you are a sick person." As explained through many examples, like relying on a skilled doctor when afflicted by illness, like a traveler on a dangerous road relying on a brave escort, like relying on a helper who protects from the danger of enemies, thieves, and wild animals, like merchants going to an ocean island relying on a helmsman, like those who want to cross the river boarding a boat and relying on a boatman, the lama, the virtuous friend who protects from the fear of birth, death, and afflictions, should be relied upon, like a sick person relying on a doctor, a traveler relying on an escort, a fearful person relying on a helper, a merchant relying on a helmsman, a boatman relying on a boatman, one should rely on him from the fear of birth, death, and the enemy of afflictions. Thus it is said. Even if it costs one's life, one should not go against the mind of this lama, the virtuous friend, and generate great courage.
