The cause for attaining that state is: First, starting from the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, making the continuum suitable through the four thoughts that turn the mind from samsara. Starting from taking refuge, which is the foundation of all paths, up to the complete perfection of the actual path, each benefit is explained and taught, therefore gather here. The result is that whichever of the three states of hearers, solitary realizers, and perfect Buddhas is attained, it is peaceful, cool, and liberated from the suffering of samsara, therefore I am very happy. Among these, now that we have encountered the Great Vehicle, we must cultivate the ten virtues, the four immeasurables, the six perfections, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, the union of calm abiding and insight, and so on, desiring only complete enlightenment. Thinking, "I will practice!" This is the generation of bodhicitta. The main practice is without clinging. Afterwards, it is sealed with dedication and aspiration, and is upheld by the three supreme methods, therefore practice it. Sixth is the guidance on relying on a spiritual friend: The story of attaining Buddhahood without relying on a lama is not mentioned in any of the sutras, tantras, or treatises. Even in direct experience, there is not a single instance of generating the qualities of the stages and paths through self-fabrication and guesswork. Like this, all sentient beings, including oneself, are nourishing conceptual thoughts on the wrong path. For the path of liberation and omniscience, it is like a blind person without a guide wandering in the wilderness. Therefore, without relying on a captain, there is no example of obtaining jewels from the island of jewels. Therefore, a virtuous spiritual friend and a virtuous companion are the manifest guides to liberation and omniscience, so one must rely on them with respect. Among these, there are three aspects: first, examining the lama; second, relying on the lama; and third, learning the conduct of the lama. First, examining the lama: In general, ordinary individuals are easily influenced by friends and other external circumstances, so one must always rely on a virtuous spiritual friend and a virtuous companion. For example, in the sandalwood forest of Malaya, if an ordinary log falls and remains for many years, the fragrance of sandalwood will adhere to it, and the ordinary wood will also emit a fragrance. If one relies on and stays with a noble person who possesses qualities, the fragrance of his qualities will adhere, and all actions will...

也会变得相似。正如所说:犹如在马拉雅的森林中,随意漂泊的普通树段,因湿润的枝叶而带有檀香的香气,依止于何者,便会随顺于它。如是说。现在已是末法时期,要找到像续部宝典中所说的,具备所有功德的具相上师非常困难。但所依止的上师,必须具备这些功德:外持别解脱戒,内持菩萨戒,密持密咒戒,在三戒的开遮持犯上没有违越,戒律清净;通达经续论典,博学多闻;如同慈爱独子般慈爱无量众生,内心充满慈悲;精通外三藏和内密咒四续部的仪轨;通过修持,在自相续中生起断证功德;以布施、爱语、利行、同事四摄法摄受具缘的弟子。需要这样的上师。圆满一切正法,因末法时期难以寻得,于三戒开遮清净的土地上,以博闻和广大的慈悲滋润心田,精通三藏密续如海的仪轨,以断证无垢智慧的果实而富饶,四摄之花盛开,依止于能摄受具缘弟子的上师。如是说。特别是,对于开示密咒金刚乘窍诀的上师,要具备以下功德:相续不断地接受续部宝典中所说的成熟灌顶之水,使相续成熟;不违越灌顶时所承诺的三昧耶和戒律;烦恼和分别念微薄,相续寂静调柔;通达密咒金刚乘基道果的一切续部要义;圆满亲见本尊等修持的验相;证悟实相,从而解脱自相续;内心充满慈悲,只为利他而精进;舍弃对今世的贪执,行为俭朴;欣然接受来世,精进修法;

will also become similar. As it is said: Just as in the forests of Malaya, an ordinary piece of wood wandering around, due to the moist branches, carries the fragrance of sandalwood, it follows after whatever it relies upon. So it is said. Now that it is the degenerate age, it is very difficult to find a guru who possesses all the qualities described in the precious tantras. However, the guru one relies upon must possess these qualities: outwardly upholding the Pratimoksha vows, inwardly the Bodhisattva vows, and secretly the Secret Mantra vows, without transgressing the rules of what is permitted and forbidden in the three vows, thus having pure discipline; being learned and having great knowledge without being confused about the texts of the Sutras, Tantras, and Shastras; having a heart moistened with compassion, cherishing limitless sentient beings like an only child; being skilled in the rituals of the outer three Pitakas and the inner four classes of Secret Mantra Tantras; having manifested special qualities of abandonment and realization in one's own mind-stream by relying on the practice of the meaning; and gathering fortunate disciples with the four means of gathering—generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency. One needs such a guru. It is said that it is difficult to find the perfection of all the sacred Dharma practices due to the power of the degenerate age, but on the pure ground of the three vows' permissions and prohibitions, the mind-stream is moistened by great learning and compassion, skilled in the rituals of the ocean of Sutras and Tantras, rich with the fruit of stainless wisdom of abandonment and realization, and adorned with the blossoming flowers of the four means of gathering, rely on one who gathers the bees of fortunate disciples. So it is said. In particular, the guru who shows the profound essence of the Secret Mantra Vajrayana instructions should have the following qualities: the mind-stream is ripened by the uninterrupted flow of empowerment water that matures, as described in the precious tantras; not violating the Samaya and vows undertaken during empowerment; the mind-stream is peaceful and gentle with little affliction and conceptual thought; understanding all the essential meanings of the Secret Mantra Vajrayana's ground, path, and fruition; having perfected the signs of accomplishment in approach and attainment, such as seeing the face of the Yidam deity; having realized the meaning of reality and thus liberated one's own mind-stream; being filled with compassion and striving solely for the benefit of others; having abandoned attachment to this life, being simple in actions; gladly accepting the future life, diligently focusing on the Dharma;
