Furthermore, one should also encourage others to do so. Skilled in methods of guiding disciples through whatever means are appropriate, acting according to the guru's command, and possessing the blessings of the lineage. One should rely on such a guru. In particular, the guru who teaches the essential instructions is: Having received empowerment, abiding by vows, and being extremely peaceful. Understanding the meaning of the tantras of the ground, path, and fruition. Having perfected the signs of approach and accomplishment, and liberated one's own mind through realization. Possessing immeasurable compassion, solely working for the benefit of others. Having few activities, being diligent, and focusing on the Dharma. Having great renunciation, and also encouraging others to do so. Skilled in methods and possessing the blessings of the lineage. By relying on such a guru, accomplishments are swift. That is it. Furthermore, the characteristics of a guru to be abandoned are as follows: Even though one's own mind has no qualities of listening, contemplation, and meditation, one thinks, "I am the prince or nephew of such and such a guru, superior to others, and my lineage is also like that," protecting one's lineage like a Brahmin; or, even if one has some qualities of listening, contemplation, and meditation, one does not cultivate them with a pure intention for the sake of the next life, but rather, fearing the decline of the guru's seat, etc., where one resides, one does so for the sake of this life, which is like the "nature of wood," unable to tame the disciple's mind. Even though one's own mind has no qualities that surpass ordinary beings, one attains a high position without examination due to the faith of foolish people, and one's mind swells with gain and respect, filled with arrogance, and one does not see the qualities of the holy ones, which is like a "frog in a well." In the past, in a well, an old frog always lived there, and then a frog came from the great ocean. The frog in the well asked, "Where do you come from?" It replied, "I come from the great ocean." It asked, "How big is your ocean?" It replied, "The ocean is very big." It asked, "Is it about a quarter of my well?" It replied, "No." It asked, "Is it about half?" It replied, "No." It asked, "Is it as big as my well?" It replied, "No." It replied, "It is impossible for it to be that big, we must go and see." So the two frogs went together. When it saw the ocean, the frog in the well fainted and turned over and died. One should rely on a virtuous guru, and

Having not diligently studied the scriptures and tantras, their learning is meager. Because their minds are coarse with afflictions and lack mindfulness and awareness, their vows and commitments are broken. Their mental capacity is lower than that of ordinary people, yet they act like accomplished beings, so their conduct is sky-high. Because they are full of anger and sarcasm, the sound of love and compassion is cut off. Such a person is called a spiritual friend like a mad guide, who leads one astray. In particular, if they have no qualities whatsoever that surpass your own, and a lama who is devoid of love, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, is like a blind guide, unable to open the eye of discernment. Like a Brahmin who protects his lineage, or like a pond that fears the decay of a monastery, they bathe in a place where the fruits of study and contemplation do not reside. Like a guide who is like the natural break in a tree, even if they do not contradict the nature of ordinary people, fools apply faith to whatever place they happen to be. A spiritual friend who is filled with wealth, respect, and offerings, like a well's pulley, has little learning, broken vows and commitments, a low mental capacity, and conduct that has gone sky-high. Mad guides who have cut off the sound of love and compassion increase sin. In particular, if they do not have qualities that surpass your own, and you rely on a lama who is devoid of the mind of enlightenment because of their fame, it is a great mistake like a blind captain, and you will wander in the darkness of false companionship. So it is said. Therefore, the Great Orgyen also said: "Not examining the lama is like drinking poison; not examining the disciple is like jumping off a cliff." So it is said. The lama is the one to whom you can confide from this life to life after life, and who shows the place of what to abandon and what to adopt. If you do not examine them well and meet an evil spiritual friend, the accumulation of merit of a faithful person's one lifetime will be devoured, and the attainment of this leisure and fortune will be wasted. For example, it is like a poisonous snake coiled at the foot of a tree, and thinking it is the shade of the tree, you go near it and are killed by the snake. Therefore, if you do not examine the holy ones very carefully, the accumulation of merit of the faithful will be devoured, and the leisure that was obtained with effort will be deceived, like mistaking a poisonous snake for the shade of a tree. So it is said. Therefore, examine them well and discern without error, possessing those qualities mentioned earlier.
