Saving the lives of five hundred merchants, and ultimately saving the black, short-speared people from the suffering of hell, thus creating great merit. Similarly, the Brahmin boy who loved the stars practiced celibacy in the forest for many years. When he went to the village for alms, a Brahmin girl fell in love with him and tried to die. He felt compassion and married her, thus completing the accumulation of a million kotis of kalpas. Therefore, killing and non-celibacy are also permitted for those like them. If one acts out of one's own desires, driven by the three poisons of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, it is not permitted for anyone. Taking what is not given is also permitted for a Bodhisattva of great intelligence who has no selfish desires at all, who steals from the possessions of a rich, miserly person and then uses it to make offerings to the Three Jewels and give alms to beggars. Lying is also permitted to protect the lives of sentient beings who are about to be killed, and to protect the property of the Three Jewels. It is not permitted to deceive others for one's own desires. Slander, for example, if a virtuous person and a person who likes to do evil are good friends, but the person who does evil is powerful, and there is a fear that the virtuous person will be led astray, it is permitted to separate the two. It is not permitted to separate two people who are naturally harmonious. Harsh speech is also permitted to forcibly lead those who cannot be tamed with gentle methods into the Dharma, and to attack their faults by speaking instructions. As Jowo (Atisha) said, "The best of teachers is to attack faults. The best of instructions is to strike at faults." This is permitted, but harsh speech that degrades others is not permitted. Idle talk is also permitted to entice some people who like to talk, but cannot enter the Dharma if they are stopped from talking, and to bring them into the Dharma gate. But it is not permitted as a cause of distracting oneself and others. The three mental transgressions, because the motivation cannot be transformed into good, and once a bad thought arises, it becomes unwholesome, so it is never permitted to anyone. Thus, the doer of good and bad deeds is

Even if it's just the mind and doesn't manifest in body and speech, the mind's thoughts can produce great results, both virtuous and non-virtuous, and there are many such examples. Therefore, always examine your own mind, and if the mind is dwelling in virtue, cultivate joy and increase virtue. If it is dwelling in non-virtue, confess immediately. Now that I have heard so much Dharma, I am still generating such thoughts, how embarrassing. From now on, I must strive to ensure that such thoughts do not arise in my mind. When performing a virtuous act, first examine your own motivation carefully. If the motivation is virtuous, then perform that virtuous act. If the motivation is based on competing with others, hypocrisy, seeking friends, etc., then diligently correct the motivation and ensure that it is embraced by bodhicitta. If you cannot abandon the motivation no matter what, it is better to postpone performing the virtuous act. In the past, Geshe Ben had many patrons who came to visit him. One morning, he made offerings to the Three Jewels and arranged very beautiful offerings. At that time, he examined his own motivation and found that he was becoming hypocritical in front of the patrons, and his motivation was impure, so he grabbed a handful of ashes and scattered them on the offerings, saying, "Monks should not do hypocritical things, but dwell well." When Father Dampa heard this, he said, "Among the offerings in Tibet, that handful of ashes from Ewa Gungyal is the best." Therefore, at all times and in all circumstances, examine your own mind well. If you are doing evil deeds, immediately recognize them and prevent the mind from associating with non-virtue through confession and vows. It is impossible for negative thoughts and intentions not to arise in the minds of ordinary beings in this realm. Also, in the past, when Geshe Ben was staying at the house of a patron, the patrons went outside. He thought, "I don't have any tea, so now when I go to the retreat, I must steal some tea to boil." As soon as he put his hand into the tea bag, he immediately realized it and called the patrons, saying, "I am doing such a thing, cut off this hand from the wrist!" Similarly, Jowo Je said, "Since entering the Pratimoksha vows, I have not committed even the slightest offense. The Bodhisattva's
