Not seizing by force through unauthorized occupation, and actually plundering through military force and the like, is called taking without permission or taking by force. Like a thief secretly taking away property and food in a place unseen by the owner and claiming it as one's own, this is taking stealthily without permission. In the case of trade and the like, taking the other party's property by telling lies to deceive them, using inaccurate measures and scales, is taking without permission through deception. Therefore, nowadays, we people do not think that everything taken through deceptive means such as trade is a sin, as long as there is no actual theft. If deception is carried out, then the profit gained from trade is no different from actual theft. Especially in this day and age, even lamas and monks do not regard doing business as a sin or a fault, but instead devote their lives to it and consider themselves to be great. However, for a lama or a monk, there is nothing more wasteful than doing business. Because one is always distracted by it, one's mind is distracted from studying and purifying obscurations, and there is no opportunity. Even when going to bed at night, one is thinking about calculations, and the roots of faith, renunciation, compassion, and so on are cut off. One always becomes a slave to delusion. Once, Jetsun Milarepa went to a monastery and slept at the door of a monk's room at night. There was a monk there who was lying in bed at night thinking about how to sell the beef from a cow that was to be slaughtered the next day. How much to sell the head for, how much to sell the shoulder blade of the leg for, how much to sell the arm for, how much to sell the calf for, and so on, he calculated the price of everything inside and outside the cow. He did not fall asleep for a single moment, and when he had calculated the price of everything except the tail, it was dawn. He immediately got up to do his prayers and offer tormas, etc. The Jetsun was still sleeping, so he came and ridiculed him, saying, "You claim to be a practitioner, but you can't do any prayers or recitations, and you're still sleeping." The Jetsun said, "Although I don't always sleep like this, tomorrow I myself have a cow to slaughter, and I am thinking about how to sell it."

Because he kept making excuses, not finding an opening, he was told, "You fell asleep this morning," which touched his sore spot. Similarly, now those who only do business are distracted day and night by being engrossed in thoughts of commercial calculations, and they die engrossed in that state. Moreover, when doing business, even if the thing they are selling is bad, they give it all sorts of praise, saying, "I used to sell it to so-and-so for such a high price, but I didn't sell it to him. When I bought it, I gave such a high price," and so on, telling only lies. Similarly, when two others are doing business, if they want to buy it themselves, they try to prevent the other two from agreeing, speaking ill of the other's goods, arguing over debts, and so on, with harsh words. They say things like, "This mountain is very expensive" for no reason, and they raise the price even if they don't intend to buy, and so on, talking nonsense. Towards the other's goods, they have a greedy mind of wanting to possess them with arrogance, a harmful mind of wanting others to fail, and they engage in killing by buying and selling sheep for slaughter, and so on. Except for wrong views and sexual misconduct, all ten non-virtuous actions are actually complete. If the business does not go well, both oneself and others will have their wealth diminished, and everything will be put into suffering. In the end, both oneself and others will be harmed, and one will die of starvation. If it goes a little well, no matter how much wealth one gains, there is no contentment. Even if one has wealth like that of Vaishravana, one still likes to do sinful business. One spends one's life in a state of distraction, and at the time of death, one beats one's chest and becomes a stepping stone to falling into the lower realms. Therefore, there is nothing more conducive to increasing continuous sin and causing lineage to decline than business. One is always thinking of deceiving others with deception, looking to see which is sharper, like the tip of a knife, the tip of an awl, or the tip of a needle. Because one is always dwelling in evil thoughts, it is contrary to altruism and the mind of enlightenment, and non-virtue will increase without end. Taking what is not given also has the four branches of sin as before. Even hunters and robbers, who have a small share of coarse grain, all have the sin of killing and taking what is not given equally.
