The hunter is killed by the lasso. Bees gather in flowers because they are attached to the smell of the nose. Fish are caught by iron hooks because they are attached to the taste of the tongue. Elephants are like sinking into the mud because they are attached to the touch of the body. In addition, examine the traces of past karmic imprints. Welcoming future afflictions. Now, these three situations, namely, the mind being lost in the realm of conditions, must be abandoned at any time of listening to the Dharma, teaching the Dharma, meditating, and practicing. As Gyalsé Rinpoche said: "Past experiences of happiness and suffering are like ripples on the water. What is grasped has no trace, do not chase after it. If you must think, think about prosperity and decline, gathering and scattering. Rely on the Dharma, abide well, Maniwa. Future plans and preparations are like ants, marmots, and fishing nets. Do not let desires fall on the mind, abandon desires. If you must think, think about when death is uncertain. Do not do meaningless things, Maniwa. Present affairs are like dreams and illusions. Effort is futile, let go. Even food that is in accordance with the Dharma should be enjoyed without attachment. All actions are meaningless, Maniwa. The taming and training of the three poisons of post-meditation thoughts, before all remembrance and appearance become Dharmakaya, cannot be avoided. Remember when necessary. Do not indulge in scattered thoughts, Maniwa." Furthermore, it is said: "Do not welcome the future. If you welcome the future, it is like the father of Chandrakirti." Previously, a poor man obtained a lot of barley, put it in a container, and hung it above. He himself slept below, thinking that now I rely on this barley, I will have a lot of enjoyment. At that time, he would also marry a wife. A son would definitely be born, and what name should he give the son? Just then, the moon rose, and he thought I would name my son Chandrakirti. Just then, the mice bit through the rope of the container, and it fell down and crushed him to death. Therefore, too many thoughts of the past and future piling up are meaningless and are the cause of distracting oneself, so they should be abandoned well, and listened to with mindfulness, awareness, and caution. Do not be too inwardly absorbed, and try to remember every word and meaning of the Dharma, like a bear digging a hole, forgetting one as soon as you remember one, and there will never be a time when you remember everything. If you are too absorbed, you will also fall into the fault of drowsiness and sleep, so you should be moderately tight and loose. Previously, Growazhin was born to Kunga.

After teaching them meditation, some of them were too tense, and some were too relaxed, so they could not generate proper meditation. They reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "O you who are alive, when you lived at home, were you skilled at playing the lute?" He replied, "Very skilled." The Blessed One asked, "Does the sound of your lute come from the strings being too tight or too loose?" He replied, "Neither, it comes from being improperly adjusted." The Blessed One said, "Then your mind is also like that." Thus he attained the result. Malaba Drön also said, "Tighten when tight, loosen when loose, there lies the key to the view." As it is said, do not let the mind be too tense to be drawn inward, but keep it moderately tight and loose, and let the senses relax. If the Dharma session is too long, and one feels discomfort due to hunger or thirst, or suffers from wind, sun, rain, etc., causing the mind to become weary and unwilling to listen to the Dharma, one should abandon this attitude. Now that we have obtained the leisure and endowment of a human body, met a qualified lama, and are able to hear profound instructions, this is wonderful! The fruit of accumulating merit for countless eons is that now we are able to hear the profound Dharma, which is like enjoying a hundred meals in one lifetime. For the sake of this Dharma, we must endure whatever hardships, heat, or cold we encounter. We must listen with joy and excitement. The third is the five non-graspings: grasping at words without grasping at meaning, grasping at meaning without grasping at words, grasping without understanding the symbols, grasping by reversing the order, and grasping wrongly. All five of these must be abandoned. That is, if pleasant and beautiful words appear, one only grasps at these words, and does not engage in thinking and research on the profound meanings, which is like a child picking flowers. The splendor of words does not benefit the mind. The explanation is the flavor of words, and thinking, 'What is the use of that?' one despises it and jumps directly to the profound meaning, but without relying on words, the meaning cannot arise, and the words and meaning are separated. If one does not understand the various statements of direct, metaphorical, euphemistic, and secret meanings, confusion will arise in words and meaning, and it will contradict the correct Dharma. If one grasps by reversing the order, it will contradict the order of the teachings, and obstacles will arise in listening, reciting, and meditating. If one grasps the meaning wrongly, it will allow wrong thoughts to spread continuously, ruin one's own mindstream, and become the root of destroying the Dharma. Therefore, one must abandon these and understand the order of words, symbols, and meanings.
