Even if the body is on the Dharma seat, one does not hear a single word of the Dharma. Secondly, even if one hears the Dharma in this way, if one just treats it as something heard and does not keep it in mind, it is like pouring essence into a container with a hole in the bottom, no matter how much is poured in, it will not stay. No matter how much Dharma one hears, one cannot integrate it into oneself and practice it. Thirdly, if one listens to the Dharma with a faulty motivation such as wanting to be great or famous, or if one listens mixed with the thoughts of the five poisons such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, not only will the Dharma not benefit the mind, but the Dharma will also become non-Dharma, just like pouring good essence into a poisonous container. Therefore, the Indian saints also said: When listening to the Dharma, one should be like a wild animal listening to a sound; when thinking, one should be like a wise man shearing wool; when meditating, one should be like a fool tasting a flavor; when practicing, one should be like a hungry yak eating grass; at the time of fruition, one should be like the sun emerging from the clouds. Just like that, when listening to the Dharma, one should be like a wild animal fascinated by the sound of a lute, not hearing even if a hunter shoots a poisoned arrow from the side, but listening quietly. The body's hair stands on end, the eyes are filled with tears, the hands are clasped together, and one must listen without being interrupted by other thoughts. If the body is sitting on the Dharma seat, but the mind is chasing after delusions, the mouth is opening the treasure trove of idle chatter, and the eyes are wandering, then listening to the Dharma will not work. Therefore, at this time, one must also put aside the forms of virtuous deeds such as recitation and rosary counting to listen to the Dharma. After listening in this way, one must also keep the meaning of what was said in mind, not forget it, and constantly practice it. As the Great Sage said: I have only shown you the way to liberation, know that liberation depends on yourself. Just like that, the lama explains the teachings to the students, teaching the way to listen to the Dharma, the way to practice, the way to abandon sins, the way to do good, the way to practice, and so on. The students must also keep these in mind, practice them, and realize them. If they do not keep them in mind, they may only have the merit of hearing the Dharma, but they will not know even a little of the words and meaning of the Dharma, which is no different from not hearing the Dharma. Even if one keeps it in mind, if it is mixed with afflictions, the Dharma will not become pure.

The Incomparable Dagpo said: "If the Dharma is not practiced according to the Dharma, the Dharma itself will become the cause of going to the lower realms." As it is said, having wrong views about the lama and the Dharma, satirizing fellow practitioners, and having unwholesome thoughts such as arrogance and contempt, will cause one to go to the lower realms, so these must be abandoned. Secondly, the six stains, as stated in the "Exposition of Knowledge": "Arrogance and disbelief, not seeking the profound meaning, outward scattering and inward gathering, listening with weariness, are stains." As it is said, even towards the lama who teaches the Dharma, having arrogance thinking "I am superior," not having faith in the Dharma and the lama, not having the desire to seek the Dharma, the mind being distracted by external objects, gathering the five senses inward, and being weary due to long Dharma sessions, these six stains must be abandoned. Among all the afflictions, arrogance and jealousy are difficult to recognize, so one must carefully examine one's own mind. Even if one has a small amount of merit in Dharma and worldly matters, if one deliberately clings to the thought "I am like this and that," one will not see one's own faults and will not understand the qualities of others. Therefore, abandon arrogance and always maintain humility. Without faith, the entrance to the Dharma is blocked, so among the four types of faith, maintain unwavering faith. To diligently seek the Dharma is the basis of all qualities, so according to the degree of diligence, there will be three types of practitioners: superior, middling, and inferior. If one does not diligently seek the Dharma, the Dharma will not be accomplished at all. Even worldly sayings say, "For ownerless things, whoever has the greatest perseverance." Our teacher also, for the sake of four lines of Dharma, dug flesh pits in his body, fashioned a thousand butter lamp stands, offered his body in fire, and drove a thousand iron nails into his body, etc., and sought the Dharma through hundreds and thousands of hardships. As it is said, "Even crossing a fire pit and the edge of a razor, seek the sacred Dharma until death," one must listen with great diligence, overcoming all hardships of heat and cold. The mind being distracted by the objects of the six external aggregates is the root of all illusions of samsara and the source of all suffering. For example, eye consciousness clinging to form is like a moth flying into a flame; the ear
