When struck by stone powder, etc., the head splits into hundreds of pieces, and the body breaks into thousands of fragments, etc., there is always only suffering, nothing else. The appearances of winter sun being cold and summer moon being hot, etc., are also in accordance with the general situation of pretas. Some exist in the form of birds and dogs, etc., and because of their unpleasant appearance, they experience inconceivable kinds of suffering, so they also take their suffering upon themselves. They cultivate love and compassion for the sentient beings born there, and practice the three aspects of preliminary, main practice, and subsequent practice completely. The third place of the lower realms is animals, which are of two types: those that dwell in the depths and those that are scattered. The first

Many immediately attack life. Some kill for the sake of horns, hair, skin, etc., that grow on their own bodies. They kill fish for pearls, elephants for tusks and bones, tigers, leopards, otters, and foxes for their skin, musk deer for musk, wild asses and yaks for meat and blood, etc. Even one's own body becomes the cause of one's own killing, which is extremely painful. Domestic animals that depend on humans are foolish and ignorant, so even when the executioner comes near with a sword in hand, they only stare blankly and do not even know to run away. Similarly, there is not one instance where they do not experience being milked, burdened with loads, sheared, pierced through the nose, ploughed, and so on. Even when the backs of horses and pack animals are completely wounded, they are still made to carry loads and be ridden. When they have difficulty walking, they are whipped and stoned. People do not think that they experience hardship and sickness. Cattle and sheep are used until they die of old age. When they are old, whether they are slaughtered by their owners or sold to others, they are all taken to the slaughterhouse, and none die naturally. Since they experience such unimaginable suffering, when you see such suffering beings, think that it is yourself, and carefully consider how much suffering they endure, and so on. Cultivate strong compassion for all beings born in the animal realm in general, and in particular, if you have domestic animals that depend on you, care for them with love. Even for insects, bees, and tiny creatures, there is not one that does not have feelings of pleasure and pain, and all of them have been one's own parents. Therefore, cultivate love and compassion for all beings, and practice the preliminary, main, and concluding practices completely. Thus, the three places of the lower realms are such that wherever one is born, the types of suffering are heavy and long-lasting. Because of foolishness and ignorance, there is no understanding of the Dharma, so one only creates the causes for the lower realms again. If one is born in these places, it is difficult to be liberated later, and in one's own mindstream, there is the karma that will definitely cause one to be born in those lower realms.

Since there have been so many lifetimes, one should regret the deeds of the past and strive from the bottom of one's heart to repent and restrain oneself. Meditate on strong compassion for the beings born there. Dedicate all the merits accumulated in the three times for the sake of those beings born in the evil realms. Pray that they be liberated from those evil realms. Now that I have encountered the Mahayana Dharma, since there is a path of practice that can accomplish the benefit of oneself and others, I will endure hardships for the sake of the Dharma and practice diligently, vowing to lead all beings in the evil realms to pure lands. Generate such a mind: In order to be able to do this, may the Lama and the Three Jewels bless me. Pray to the deity and the Lama, and offer wonderful incense, etc. The merit of doing so is also dedicated for the benefit of sentient beings, and practiced with the Three Excellences. Since this is the case, if it is said that being born in the three lower realms is the nature of suffering, then are the three higher realms happy and joyful? Even in the higher realms there is no happiness. First, the suffering of humans: Humans have three great fundamental sufferings, the four great rivers of suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, the fear of encountering enemies, the fear of separation from loved ones, the suffering of unwanted things befalling them, the suffering of unfulfilled desires, and so on. The first of the three fundamental sufferings, the suffering of change, is: The happiness of the present moment will also turn into suffering, such as eating food that is beneficial to the body, feeling satisfied and happy, when parasites in the stomach flare up, suddenly suffering from severe cholera, or when happy now, property is taken away by enemies, houses are burned down, sudden severe illnesses occur, hearing bad words from outside, etc., immediately turning into suffering. In general, these situations of samsara, no matter how beautiful they may seem, have not the slightest permanence or stability, and in the end cannot escape suffering, so one should generate renunciation. The second is the suffering of suffering, which is the previous suffering not
