Turning into a place. Previously, in the presence of Lama Zhang Rinpoche, a great Geshe with beautiful conduct came to visit. The Lama asked the Geshe, "What Dharma do you know?" He said, "I have heard a lot of Dharma." The Lama asked, "Then, what are the eighteen hells?" He said, "Eight hot hells, eight cold hells, sixteen in total, plus the Karmapa Black Hat and Red Hat, eighteen in total." It is said that because he did not respect the Karmapa, he counted the Karmapa as one of the hells, although this was not the case, but he forgot the names of the daytime and nighttime. The Karmapa Black Hat and Red Hat were very famous at that time, so he casually listed them. If it is like this, let alone practicing after hearing the Dharma, not even understanding the words is a shameful thing! The second place of the lower realms, thinking about the suffering of the pretas: Generally speaking, pretas are divided into two types: those who live in water and those who wander in the sky. The first type is further divided into those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with special burdens, etc. The pretas with external obscurations are: For hundreds of years, they have not even heard the name of water, and they are extremely hungry and thirsty. They are constantly looking for food and drink, but they cannot find any. Sometimes they see a blue river flowing in the distance, their limbs and joints loosen, their stomachs cannot bear it, and they walk painfully and exhaustedly. When they arrive, all the water has dried up, leaving only sand, which is very painful. Also, from a distance, they see trees full of fruit, and they go as before, but when they arrive, they are dry and turn into huge dry trees. Also, they see many beautiful food and enjoyments, but when they go near, there are many people with weapons guarding them, driving them away and hitting them with weapons, which is very painful. In summer, the moon is also hot and burning, and in winter, the sun is also cold and piercing, which is even more painful, etc. Previously, when Gewa Jinse went to the land of the pretas, he was afflicted by the poisonous heat of the pretas' stinginess. He was very thirsty, and at the gate of a huge iron city, he saw a black-skinned, red-eyed, terrifying person. He asked him, "Where is there water?" He said, "Preta, there is none."

Many places say that a perfect great man is called Water Giver. He said, "I haven't found water either, so I'm called Water Giver." What are you saying? We have been born in this land for twelve years, and we haven't even heard the name of water, like that. The inner obscuration is that the mouth is only as big as the eye of a needle, and even if you drink the water of the great ocean, before it enters the throat as thin as a horse's tail, it is dried up by the poison in the mouth. Even if a little bit enters the throat, the stomach is as big as a region, and it cannot be filled. If that little bit enters the stomach, it will burn at night, burning all the lungs, heart, and internal organs, causing great suffering. When wanting to walk, the stomach is as big as a region, and the limbs as thin as grass cannot support it, causing great suffering. The obscuration of special burdens is that many nests are built on the body of each hungry ghost, and they are eaten, etc. Besides that, there are many kinds of uncertain happiness and suffering. Previously, when Ear of Grain went to the land of the hungry ghosts of a hundred thousand mountains, in an immeasurable palace, there was a woman with a good figure, beautiful, charming, and adorned with precious jewels, using four hungry ghosts as the four legs of the bed. She gave Ear of Grain food and said, "If these hungry ghosts beg you for food, don't give them even a little." When Ear of Grain was eating food, the hungry ghosts came to beg. Giving to one, it turned into pus and blood. Giving to another, it turned into eating an iron hammer. Similarly, giving to one, it turned into his own flesh, and giving to another, it turned into pus and blood. That woman came and said, "Didn't I tell you not to give? Is my compassion greater than your compassion?" What closeness do these have with you? She said, "This is my husband, this is my son, this is my daughter-in-law, this is my maidservant." Which of you was born here? She said, "The people of Jambudvipa are difficult to believe, so they don't believe." He said, "I saw it with my own eyes, how can I not believe it?" She said, "I am the Brahmin woman of the village where she lives. On the night when the stars fall, when good food is prepared, the great Arya Katyayana went for alms."
