Even if this great earth were rolled up into a ball the size of an Indian gooseberry seed, the number of seeds would still exhaust the entire earth. The sutras say that the number of times each sentient being has not been born and experienced is inexhaustible. The protector Nagarjuna said: 'The limit of mothers' milk is only the size of an Indian gooseberry seed; even if rolled into a ball, the earth cannot contain it.' Similarly, from beginningless samsara until now, there is no place where we have not been born. Because of desire, the number of heads and limbs that have been cut off is countless. If the limbs of tiny creatures such as ants could be gathered together now, they would be taller than Mount Meru, the king of mountains. With no food in their mouths, no clothes on their backs, and having experienced the suffering of cold, hunger, and thirst, if all the tears they have cried were collected without drying, they would be more than the great ocean. Even having been born in the hells and drunk molten copper that is more than the four great oceans, they still do not generate even a moment of weariness with this state of samsara, but are bound by attachment and clinging. In endless samsara, they must experience even more suffering than before. If, by chance, through a small amount of meritorious virtue, one obtains a long-lived body like Brahma or Indra, endowed with beauty and wealth, one will still not escape the state of death. After death, if one must experience the unbearable suffering of the lower realms, then what is the point of being deceived by a few years, months, or days of the slight happiness of power and freedom from illness in this body, only to have the happiness of the higher realms exhausted and become extremely poor and miserable, or to have to unwillingly experience the unbearable suffering of the lower realms? What essence is there in this present happiness, which is like waking up from a fleeting dream? Even those who seem happy and comfortable for a short time through a small amount of meritorious virtue cannot stay for even a moment once the karma that propels them is exhausted. Even the gods who dwell on jeweled thrones spread with divine cloth, enjoying the pleasures of the five senses, will, when their lifespan is exhausted, fall headfirst onto the burning iron ground of the hells in the blink of an eye.

There are also instances of indulging in suffering. Even the sun and moon, which illuminate the four continents, eventually arise in the darkness of the intercontinental night, to the point where one cannot even see the extension of one's own limbs. Therefore, do not trust the apparent happiness of samsara. So, in this life, one must escape from the great ocean of suffering of samsara and attain the state of perfect and lasting happiness of Buddhahood. One must practice with the completeness of the preliminary practices, the main practices, and the subsequent practices. Second, there are six ways to contemplate the specific sufferings of each of the six realms. First, there are eighteen categories of hells. Among them, the eight hot hells are: starting from the Reviving Hell, they are stacked one below the other like floors of a building, until they reach the Uninterrupted Hell. All of these hells, their foundation and environment are like a blacksmith's heated iron, without even a place to put one's foot, only burning flames, extremely hot. The first of these is the Reviving Hell: on the heated iron ground, in the midst of burning flames, countless hell beings, like snowflakes and blizzards, are gathered together by the force of karma. These beings are also drawn by the karma of generating hatred. Due to this action of similar cause, all beings, like seeing an enemy, generate anger towards each other and begin to fight. Due to the inconceivable weapons manifested by karma appearing in their hands, they strike each other and all die. When the sound "Revive!" comes from the sky, all beings revive and fight as before, etc., repeatedly experiencing death and revival, which is very painful. The lifespan is: fifty human years is one day and night for the Four Great Kings. Thirty days and nights is a month. Twelve months is counted as a year. Five hundred heavenly years is one day in the Reviving Hell. Counting in this way, thirty days is a month, and twelve months is counted as a year, one must experience five hundred years of suffering. The second is the Black Line Hell: on the heated iron ground, the executioners of Yama lay the bodies of the hell beings down like firewood, and draw four, eight, sixteen, thirty-two black lines.
