When asked, Geshe Potowa said: "Meditating on impermanence is very important for practicing the Dharma. If you meditate on the impermanence of death, firstly, it becomes the cause for entering the Dharma; secondly, it becomes the condition for urging virtuous deeds; and finally, it becomes the helper for realizing the equality of the Dharma. Also, if you meditate on impermanence, firstly, it becomes the cause for severing attachment to this life; secondly, it becomes the condition for reversing attachment to all of samsara; and finally, it becomes the helper for entering the path of liberation. Also, if you meditate on impermanence, firstly, it becomes the cause for generating faith; secondly, it becomes the condition for initiating diligence; and finally, it becomes the helper for generating wisdom. Also, if you meditate on impermanence and it arises in your mindstream, firstly, it becomes the cause for seeking the Dharma; secondly, it becomes the condition for practicing the Dharma; and finally, it becomes the helper for perfecting the Dharma. Also, if you meditate on impermanence and it arises in your mindstream, firstly, it becomes the cause for initiating armor-like diligence; secondly, it becomes the condition for initiating applying diligence; and finally, it becomes the helper for initiating irreversible diligence." He said. Father Dampa also said: "If impermanence arises in your mindstream, firstly, it becomes the cause for entering the Dharma; secondly, it becomes the whip of diligence; and finally, it causes the attainment of the clear light Dharmakaya." Therefore, if a non-artificial concept of impermanence does not arise in your mindstream, no matter how many years you study and practice the Dharma, it will ultimately become the cause of Dharma mediocrity. The holy one said: "Among those who practice the Dharma in Tibet, not one seems to think they will die, but not one is seen to remain alive. They wear fancy clothes and are happy to accumulate wealth. I wonder if they are paying off the Lord of Death, Yama, with food and wealth? They accumulate all sorts of good things, I wonder if they are secretly paying court to hell? Seeing these Tibetan practitioners, I feel like laughing, haha! The more they have heard, the greater their pride; the better their practice, the more they accumulate food and wealth; the more they rely on solitude, the more they like commotion; the more they abandon their homeland, the less shame they have. Those are Dharma mediocrities, those are happy with sin. Even when they see others die, they don't know they will die, so the first blame lies there." Therefore, meditating on the concept of impermanence is the preliminary and the door opener for all Dharma practice. This was asked of Geshe Potowa.

When asked for advice on how to subdue adverse conditions, Potowa said, "You should contemplate impermanence and death a lot. If a mind arises that you will definitely die, then it will not be difficult to abandon sins, and it will not be difficult to practice virtue. On top of that, you should meditate a lot on love and compassion. If that arises in your mindstream, then doing things for the benefit of sentient beings will not be difficult. On top of that, you should meditate a lot on the emptiness, the true nature of all phenomena. If that arises in your mindstream, then it will not be difficult to subdue delusion." That's what he said. Like that, if impermanence arises in your mindstream, then attachment to all worldly affairs in this life will be reversed from the depths of your heart, like giving roasted barley flour to someone with a vomiting sickness. Je Rinpoche also said, "No matter what kind of high officials, powerful people, rich people, or charming people I see in this world, I don't develop envy for them. Instead, I look at the biographies of the previous great masters. This is because impermanence has arisen a little in my mindstream. I have no better advice to give than this." He said that again and again. So, what is the measure of impermanence arising in the mindstream like that? It needs to be like Geshe Kharak Gomchung. He went to practice in the solitary place of Jomo Kharak in Tsang (now Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region), and saw a pile of thorns at the door of the cave. His clothes got caught on it, and at first he thought of cutting it off, but later he thought, "Alas, I don't know if I will die in this cave and be able to come out again, so it would be more secure to do virtuous deeds myself." So he didn't cut it off. When he went out again, the same thing happened, and he thought, "I don't know if I will be able to go back inside from the door." He stayed like that for many years, and even after the lama attained accomplishment and left, he didn't cut off the thorns. Similarly, for Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa, there was a pool called 'Longevity Water' at Stonri Rishi, but because there were no steps, it was very difficult to go up and down. Someone said, "Let's make some steps here." He said, "I don't know if I will be sleeping here tomorrow, what's the point of doing such hard work?" It is said that he always spoke words of impermanence. Therefore, we ourselves must strive to cultivate until such impermanence arises in our mindstream.
