The Groundwork. The main practice is to tame the mind with various methods, meditating until genuine impermanence arises in the continuum. Conclude by sealing it with the seal of dedication. Having practiced in this way, one must strive to follow the footsteps of the previous holy ones. Even when impermanence is manifest, we cling to permanence. Even when reaching the gate of old age, we boast of youth. May beings with deluded thoughts, like myself, be blessed to generate impermanence in their minds. This is the instruction on the impermanence of life. Realize that the activities of samsara are meaningless. With great compassion, seek only the benefit of others. Without attachment to samsara or nirvana, act according to the Mahayana teachings. I prostrate at the feet of the incomparable Lama. The Faults of Samsara. The third topic is the instruction on the faults of samsara, which also has two aspects. First, the manner of listening to and teaching the Dharma is the same as before. Second, the Dharma to be explained is divided into contemplating the suffering of samsara in general and contemplating the suffering of each of the six realms in particular. The first is that, as previously explained, even if one obtains the difficult-to-obtain leisure and endowment, one cannot remain for long but is subject to the power of impermanence and death. If, after death, it were like a fire extinguished or water dried up, there would be nothing more to say. However, one does not cease to exist after death but must take rebirth. Once one has taken rebirth, one has not transcended the state of samsara. In general, samsara is like a potter's wheel, a pulley for a water bucket, or a bee inside a jar, revolving from one place to another. It is like putting a bee inside a jar and sealing it; no matter where the bee flies, it cannot go outside the jar. Similarly, no matter where one is born in the high or low places of samsara, one does not transcend the realm of samsara. The upper part of the jar is like the higher realms of gods and humans, and the lower part is like the three lower realms. Thus, these six realms of beings, with contaminated karma, the causes of virtue and non-virtue, are born and revolve from one place to another, and therefore it is called samsara. We have wandered in this state of samsara since beginningless time. Among all these sentient beings in samsara, there is not one who has not been a parent, enemy, friend, or neutral party to each other. This is his mother, that is his mother, and so on. The number of mothers of one sentient being...
