Yes. Especially in the villages, towns, monasteries, and other places where we live, those who were once prosperous and flourishing are now in a state of decline. Those who were once poor and weak are now strong and wealthy. None of this transcends the nature of impermanence. Even within our own family, the fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, and all those who were born in the past have gradually died, and now only their names remain. Many of our own siblings have also died, and when the time comes, we do not know who is still alive and who is no longer here. Those who were prosperous and flourishing last year, like ornaments of the human realm, many of them are now only names. Those who are now strong and wealthy, and are the object of envy for many, no one knows whether they will still be here at this time next year, or even next month. Even our own livestock, such as goats, sheep, and dogs, how many have died in the past, and how many remain now? If we examine what will become of all of this in the end, it cannot transcend the nature of impermanence. Of all the people who existed a hundred years ago, not one remains alive today. All the beings in this world today will die within a hundred years, and not one will remain. Therefore, there is nothing permanent or stable in all these phenomena of the outer and inner worlds. All that is born will die, all that is accumulated will be exhausted, all that gathers will separate, all that is built will collapse, and all that is high will fall. Likewise, enemies and friends, happiness and suffering, good and bad, and all thoughts are impermanent. As high as the sky, as powerful as lightning, as rich as a dragon, as beautiful as a god, as splendid as a rainbow, no matter who it is, when death suddenly arrives, they will leave helplessly with bare hands, forced to leave behind all that they cannot bear to part with, such as wealth, relatives, friends, retinue, disciples, sangha, territory, food, and possessions, leaving like a hair pulled from butter. Even a lama who is the leader of thousands of monks cannot take even one monk with him. Even with tens of thousands of
