Whether they are officials from somewhere, or lamas under an umbrella, whether they are hermitage practitioners, or those who boast of being good renunciates in the kingdom, all of them are controlled by these causes of being without leisure, so even if they practice Dharma for years, they do not go on the right path. Therefore, instead of rushing to engage in the mere appearance of Dharma, one should first examine one's own mind well, and carefully examine whether these twenty-four qualities of leisure and endowment are complete or not. If they are complete, then cultivate joy and think again and again from the depths of your heart that now that you have obtained this rare leisure and endowment, you must not let it go to waste, but you must definitely accomplish a true Dharma practice. If they are not complete, then by all means strive to complete them through various methods. At all times and in all ways, you must strive diligently to examine whether or not your own mind possesses these qualities of leisure and endowment. If you do not examine in this way, then if even one of these qualities of leisure and endowment is missing, you will not have the opportunity to practice true Dharma. Even for accomplishing small, temporary needs in the world, many causes, conditions, and interdependent relationships must come together. So why would it not be necessary for many causes, conditions, and interdependent relationships to come together in order to accomplish the ultimate goal of practicing the sacred Dharma? For example, even for a traveler to boil a cup of hot tea on the road, many things must come together, such as the pot for boiling the tea, water, wood, fire, and so on. And even that one thing, fire, will not arise without the coming together of many causes and conditions such as a fire striker, flint, tinder, and hands. If even one thing like tinder is missing from all of these, then even if everything else is present, it will be of no benefit at all, and the boiling of tea will have to be abandoned completely. Similarly, if even one of these qualities of leisure and endowment is missing, there is absolutely no opportunity to practice true Dharma. Therefore, if you examine your own mind well, you will find that it is definitely difficult to have even eighteen leisure and endowments, because it is rarer to have the ten endowments than to have leisure. Even just being born as a human, having complete faculties, and being born in the central land (referring to a region where Buddhism flourishes) may exist, but if one embarks on the path of negative actions or does not have faith in the teachings of the Buddha, then one does not have the three endowments. If either of these two is missing, then one does not have the four endowments. Moreover, not embarking on the path of negative actions is especially difficult, because (people's) three doors of body, speech, and mind are engaged in non-virtuous actions.

If one does everything for the desires of this life, one may be known as a good person or a wise person in this life, but in reality, it is all in vain. Furthermore, among the five freedoms, even if the Buddha has appeared, taught the Dharma, and the teachings are established, if one has not entered the gate of one's own teachings, then three are lacking. Entering the gate of the teachings does not mean that one has entered the teachings just by the number of years one has studied or the titles one has received. To grasp the beginning of liberation, one must have a genuine renunciation that knows that all things in samsara are meaningless, and to enter the Mahayana path, one must have a genuine Bodhicitta born in one's mind. Even if one has unwavering faith in the Three Jewels, even if it costs one's life, one cannot be sure that one has entered the teachings just by reciting scriptures and wearing yellow robes. Therefore, it is very important to understand the nature of these freedoms and endowments as they are, without error, and to examine them. Third, reflecting on the example of how difficult it is to obtain: The Blessed One said that it is more difficult to obtain a human body than for the hole of a yoke on the surface of an ocean churned by great waves to meet the neck of a blind turtle at the bottom. That is, if this three-thousandfold world were to become one great ocean, and on top of that ocean there were a yoke like the one made from the horns of a plowing ox, with a single hole, being pushed from east to west by the waves from the east, and from west to east by the waves from the west, moving without stopping for even a moment. And in the depths of that ocean, there is a blind turtle that comes to the surface of the ocean once every hundred years, it is very difficult for these two to meet. The yoke has no consciousness, no mind to seek the turtle; the blind turtle has no eyes to see the yoke. If the yoke were fixed in one place, it might be possible to meet, but it is always moving without stopping for even a moment. If the turtle were always wandering on the surface of the ocean, it might be possible to meet, but it only appears on the surface of the ocean once every hundred years, so it is very difficult for these two to meet. Even if by chance the hole of the yoke were to fit over the neck of the turtle, it is still possible. However, the sutras say that obtaining a human body with freedoms and endowments is more difficult than that. The meaning of this is expressed by the venerable Nagarjuna: 'In the vast ocean, the hole of a yoke and a blind turtle meeting, even that is possible, but to obtain a human body is even more difficult.'
