If one knows these, one will lose faith in the Dharma. Those who have no autonomy and are used as slaves by others, even if they want to practice the Dharma, will be unable to do so because they are controlled by others. Because they fear the food, clothing, or other harms of this life, they enter the Dharma for these reasons, but they have no conviction in the Dharma from the depths of their hearts, so they are driven by old habits to engage in non-Dharmic activities. Those hypocrites who pretend to be practitioners in order to obtain wealth, respect, and fame, although they pretend to be practitioners in appearance, only pursue the interests of this life in their hearts, and therefore are separated from the path of liberation, and these eight situations are also not free to practice the Dharma. Next are the eight situations of not being free due to a distracted mind: Being bound by the strong bonds of wealth, enjoyment, children, property, relatives, and friends of this life, one is preoccupied with striving for these things and has no time to practice the Dharma. If one has no foundation of character and no progress in conduct due to one's own bad nature, as the past saints said, "One can tame the disciple's merits, but one cannot tame the foundation of character," even if one meets a true spiritual friend, it is difficult to turn to the holy path. If one hears about the faults of the lower realms and samsara, or the suffering of this life, and does not develop a sense of fear at all, then the root of entering the Dharma—the mind of renunciation—will not arise. If one has no faith in the true Dharma and the Guru, then the door to the teachings will be closed and one will not be able to enter the path of liberation. If one enjoys engaging in non-virtuous and sinful actions, and the three doors are not subdued, one will be separated from the merits of the saints and turn away from the Dharma. If there is no pure merit and no perception of the true Dharma, it is like putting grass in front of a dog, one has no interest in the Dharma, and therefore no merit will arise in oneself. Entering the common vehicle and violating the mind of enlightenment and vows, one can only fall into the lower realms and cannot escape from the state of not being free. Entering the vehicle of Secret Mantra, if one violates the vows to the Guru and Dharma friends, one will destroy oneself and others, and cut off the opportunity for accomplishment. These eight situations are far from the holy Dharma and extinguish the lamp of liberation. If one does not carefully examine these sixteen states of not being free, then in this degenerate age, even if one has a fully endowed human body and the appearance of practicing the Dharma, one is only...
