Or when it reaches around the eighth period, and when the dregs of life, views, and afflictions, that is, the five dregs, are flourishing, even if it reaches such a time, the actual teachings of scripture and realization will not disappear, indicating that the wealth of the sacred Dharma is complete. Even though the teachings remain, if one does not enter the door of the teachings oneself, it is like the sun rising in the world, but it has no benefit or harm to the blind. Or like going to the seashore, but not quenching one's thirst if one does not drink oneself, the teachings of scripture and realization do not reach one's own mindstream. Even entering, if it is for the sake of pacifying diseases and evil spirits in this life, or merely out of fear of the suffering of the lower realms in the next life, entering the teachings is called the Dharma of Fearful Protection, and one cannot truly enter the path. Furthermore, if one enters the teachings for the sake of food and clothing in this life, or merely seeking the happiness of gods and humans in the next life, it is called the Dharma of Wishing for Good Results. If one realizes that all of samsara is meaningless, and enters the door of Dharma seeking the path of liberation, then one has grasped the beginning of the path, and it is called entering the door of the teachings. Even if one enters the teachings, it is not beneficial if one is not guided by a virtuous spiritual friend. As it is said in the Compendium: "All Buddhas and Dharmas rely on virtuous spiritual friends." "The Victorious One, possessing the supreme of all qualities, spoke thus." Like this, the teachings are vast, the scriptures are numerous, and there is no end to the objects of knowledge. Therefore, relying on the oral instructions of the guru, one cannot gather all the essential points of the Dharma and practice them. Previously, when Jowo Atisha came to Tibet, Khu, Ngok, and Drom asked: In order for a single fortunate individual to attain liberation and the state of omniscience, which is more important, the scriptures and treatises or the guru's instructions? Atisha said: The guru's instructions are more important. They asked: Why is that? Atisha said: If one is skilled in reciting and explaining the three baskets, and is proficient in the characteristics of all Dharmas, but when it comes to practice, if one does not have the practical application of the guru's instructions, then the Dharma and the individual will become separated. Again, they asked: If the practical application of the guru's instructions is summarized, can it be concluded that it consists of abiding in the three vows and striving to engage in the virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind? Jowo said: That is slightly not beneficial. They asked: Then what is it? Atisha said: Even if one abides in the three vows and is pure, but if one does not become disillusioned with the three realms of samsara, then one will still create the cause for samsara.

Even if you strive to perform virtuous deeds with your body, speech, and mind, if you do not know how to dedicate them to perfect enlightenment, they will be exhausted by some inverted and confused thoughts. Even if you are learned, disciplined, practicing, and meditating, if you do not turn your mind away from the eight worldly concerns, then whatever you do will become a pursuit of this life, and you will not find the path to the next life. As it is said, being embraced by a lama, a virtuous spiritual friend, is so important. Thus, if you examine yourself and find that you have the eight freedoms, the ten endowments, and the eighteen qualities complete, then that is what is called a human body endowed with the eighteen freedoms and endowments. Even so, as the Omniscient King of Dharma (Tsongkhapa) said in the "Wish-Fulfilling Treasure," it is also important to cherish not being controlled by the eight inabilities caused by sudden circumstances and the eight inabilities caused by deficiencies of wisdom. As it is said, in the "Wish-Fulfilling Treasure": "Disturbed by the five poisons, obscured by foolishness, seized by demons, bound by laziness, overwhelmed by the great ocean of evil deeds, enslaved by others, fearing protection, pretending to be Dharma, these are the eight kinds of inabilities." And "Bound by vows, with extremely bad conduct, not weary of samsara, lacking even a little faith, not performing virtuous deeds, committing sins, separated from the Dharma, breaking vows and commitments, these are called the eight kinds of inabilities of wisdom." As it is said, first, the eight inabilities caused by sudden circumstances: those beings whose minds are greatly disturbed by the five poisons, such as hatred for enemies and attachment to friends, even if they occasionally have the thought of wanting to practice the true Dharma, because their own five poisons are too strong, they are mostly controlled by them and cannot accomplish the true Dharma. Those who are extremely foolish, without even a little light of wisdom, even if they enter the Dharma gate, cannot understand even a little of the words and meanings of the Dharma, and have no opportunity to hear, contemplate, and meditate. If they are embraced by demonic spiritual friends who propagate inverted views and behaviors, their own minds will be led astray, and they will be contrary to the true Dharma. Even if they want to learn the Dharma, those who are lazy and have no diligence will be controlled by laziness and procrastination, and will not be able to accomplish the Dharma. Even if they diligently practice the Dharma, those who are unable to generate qualities in their own minds, who are burdened with heavy sins, and whose ocean of evil deeds has burst forth, will not be able to change the results of their own actions.
