Recognizing what it is like and observing where it goes, it will purify itself. Maintaining this state, eventually there is no need to specifically trace it, and the thought will liberate itself, which is called self-arising wisdom. If you cut off the root of movement, that alone will make thoughts disappear into the dharmadhatu. That is its meaning. In general, what is called ordinary consciousness is not to modify the nature of any arising thought. If you are not distracted from this, that alone is enough. But those of lower faculties cannot do this, so they cultivate contrived meditation. If you cannot calm down by looking at any arising thought, but become more scattered, then relax the body. Let the scatterer scatter himself, and by observing his state, he will naturally calm down. Scattering and abiding are both mind, so they will naturally merge into one. By cultivating meditation, it will become stable. It's like: Like a crow flying from a boat, Circling and circling, it returns there again. This example shows that it is necessary to tie a thin iron chain to the crow's foot from the edge of the sea. When you reach the middle of the sea, if you fly up, the sky is empty, and the surroundings are empty. Below is water, and there is nowhere to go. No matter which direction you fly, you cannot find a place to go or land. Just like that, it will eventually fall back on the original boat. Thoughts are the same, whether scattered or not scattered, they are emptiness. Whether abiding or flowing, they cannot be separated from emptiness. Therefore, it will fall back into the state in which it arises. Even those of lower faculties can gradually abide in this. Therefore, observe carefully, study carefully, and learn this method. In this way, the three faculties of superior, medium, and inferior are divided into nine categories, showing the method of practice. As it is said in the Great Perfection Oral Transmission: The superior faculty can meditate through watching, the medium faculty can meditate through meditation, and the inferior faculty can accomplish through action. That is its meaning. Furthermore, meditation requires perseverance. Even if the Dharma is profound, if you do not meditate, then the profound instructions will only remain in the books. Now, Even if meditation has entered your mind, if you do not meditate regularly, you will become bold and reckless, disrespectful to the Dharma, and lazy in practice, and it will be of no help at the time of death, so be careful. Gyalwa Godtsangpa said: Outer retreat can stay in the mountains, inner retreat can stay in the hut, secret retreat can stay in bed.

To abide in the view of non-duality, to abide in meditation without distraction, to abide in conduct without attachment, it is said that six things must be complete. Generally, there are two types of meditation: outward focus and inward focus. For the mind that is difficult to tame, one must focus outward, so one does not separate from mindfulness. Then, the thoughts themselves focus inward, and all that arises becomes meditation. Moreover, this is because ordinary awareness itself is in a state of non-attachment. It is said that even when a great meditator lets go of meditation, it is when meditation does not let go of the great meditator. To reach that state, one must meditate continuously. If one does not meditate, even if a little experience arises now, it will disappear, so do not treat meditation like a rainbow. Do not treat meditation like an iron hook; it is there when you grasp it, and it is not there when you do not grasp it, so you must guard it diligently without distraction. Do not separate; there is mindfulness but it is not connected with compassion. Therefore, at the beginning of the session, think of meditating for the benefit of all beings, and at the end of the session, dedicate the merit to all beings, wishing them to attain Buddhahood. Orgyen the Great (Padmasambhava) said: Without compassion, the root of Dharma rots. So it is very important. Do not be without selflessness, which refers to abandoning meditation after it has arisen without guarding it. Pull the mind inward and put it into meditation. Do not alternate, which refers to sometimes meditating and sometimes not meditating. Therefore, abide in the state where there is no difference between arising and not arising, and experience it. Do not cycle, which refers to the thoughts of the day also appearing at night. This is when meditation focuses inward. The supreme yoga refers to the state of the Great Perfection, free from effort. Mahamudra refers to no meditation. Also, there are those who are said to have severed lineage, who have not become vessels for Trekchö and Tögal. For such individuals, give empowerment, practice channels and winds, and then perform action mudra. Through union, introduce the nature of bliss as emptiness through the pursuit of the four joys, and then, as above, enter into mind instructions. If one cannot do that, then one should gradually liberate through methods such as touch liberation, sight liberation, taste liberation, etc. In general, mind and Mahamudra are called universally clear wisdom, and until stability is attained, one should engage in mental speculation.
