The Quintessential Instructions of Ati Yoga: A Clear Exposition of the Nature of Reality. The Quintessential Instructions of Ati Yoga: A Clear Exposition of the Nature of Reality. The Quintessential Instructions of Ati Yoga: A Clear Exposition of the Nature of Reality. Homage to all the venerable lamas. The way in which individuals with the three levels of faculties—superior, middling, and inferior—cultivate the nature of the Great Perfection is as follows: First, having well severed the taints through the stages of searching for the mind, and having established a firm foundation by properly encountering the meaning that is beyond expression, the actual way of cultivating is: For those with superior faculties, the mind itself is sufficient to abide, the mind itself is sufficient to move. Once it is decisively understood that the mind is empty, there is no difference between abiding and moving. Whatever thoughts arise, whatever appearances occur, all are the play of wisdom, the profound emptiness of the Victorious Ones' intention. Without making any alterations to it, leave it in that state. Even if thoughts remain naturally in the present moment, they are spontaneously liberated, so it is solely meditative absorption, the Dharmakaya, self-arisen wisdom, the Great Seal, the Perfection of Wisdom. It is like a rope burned by fire; it cannot bind. Its own essence is emptiness. The appearance of thoughts is the arising of the radiance of emptiness. Since there is no difference between thoughts and emptiness, the Great Orgyen said, "Because the nature of thoughts is empty, it is understood as the Dharmakaya." If one meditates, it is conceptual, so there is nothing to meditate on. Leave thoughts as they are. If one makes alterations to them, thoughts become a self-perpetuating delusion, a continuous chain. Therefore, do not make any alterations. Remaining in one's own state is the real delusion if one wanders from it, so it is necessary not to wander; that alone is sufficient. Do not fixate on any object of focus, and do not wander; that is the one thing. Dzogchen Guru Zhiwa said, "Never meditated, and never separated. The meaning of not meditating, and never separated." This means that whatever arises is meditation, so there is no meditation fabricated by the mind; therefore, it is said, "Never meditated." It is not aimless wandering from the beginning, so abiding in one's own state, one has "never separated." Like that, do not ever separate from the meaning of not meditating. That is its meaning. Depending on the difference in faculties, it is necessary to strive for seven days, fourteen days, or a month, focusing and not wandering, so that one will be able to naturally abide in whatever arises. This is the view of the Dzogchenpas, the self-liberation, the vast expanse. The Great Seal.

There is also the memory of great, clear awareness. If you maintain that continuity without interruption, then there is not even a hair's breadth of difference between ordinary, mundane consciousness and worldly conceptual thoughts. Its essence is a clear, unobstructed state, free from clinging. Samadhi is beyond objects, and post-meditation is empty. Although wisdom with purified habitual tendencies is free from grasping, it still appears as conceptual thought. That is the Dharmakaya itself. The Dzogchen Semde says that "not having conceptual thoughts, yet clearly knowing everything" refers to this. The great siddha Mitrajoki said, "If you leave whatever appears directly as it is, then effortless accomplishment is spontaneously achieved." In this way, when clinging conceptual thoughts are self-liberated, the external objects of grasping, such as forms and sounds, are also spontaneously liberated. Therefore, the good and bad of forms seen by the eyes, the pleasant and unpleasant sounds heard by the ears, as well as the good and bad of smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, the happiness and suffering, attachment and aversion of the mind, enemies and friends, earth, water, fire, wind, and so on—in short, whatever arises and appears, you should leave it as it is, without any modification. As it says in Dzogchen, "When the clear awareness of the five senses arises, if the mind's clinging conceptual thoughts do not interfere, that is the intention of the Buddhas." The Zhi Byedpa also said, "If you recognize the flaw of understanding concepts, then when conceptual thoughts arise, abiding in them is great. When afflictions are coarse, wisdom becomes clear." Therefore, the view of Dzogchen is that whatever arises, you neither abandon it nor follow it. You do not modify it in any way, but simply abide in it. Because of this, there is nothing to abandon, and there is no antidote. Because there are no contrived dharmas of negation or affirmation, acceptance or rejection, it is said, "The Dharmakaya beyond mind is Suchness." These are for those of the highest faculties. Therefore, for the three types of faculties—highest, medium, and lowest—you should teach according to their respective intellectual abilities. The three types of medium faculties should be guided through the union of shamatha and vipashyana. On this, Gyalwa Yang Gonpa said, "Do not meditate on what is to be meditated on with the mind. Do not modify the natural state with fabrication. Do not see conceptual thoughts as faults. Do not intentionally meditate on non-conceptual thought. Let the mind rest in its own state, and relax the body and mind. In this way, you will reach the depths of meditative quiescence." By continually practicing in this way, by prolonging the time of abiding, the fluctuations will become less and less, and the mind's abiding will become more and more stable.
