This is another section. Initial application and sustained application, joy, bliss, and equanimity, these five. Second, conviction, joy, bliss, and equanimity, these four. Third, equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and equanimity, these five. Fourth, equanimity, mindfulness, feeling, equanimity, and equanimity, these four. The differences between these are: Abandoning initial and sustained application is the second dhyana. If asked what the difference is between the first and second dhyanas, the answer is: there is the difference of complete perfection of equanimity. Abandoning joy is the third dhyana. The second and third dhyanas have the difference of complete perfection of benefit. Abandoning bliss is the fourth dhyana. The third and fourth dhyanas have the difference of complete purity and perfection. The branches of the fourth dhyana are: initial and sustained application, joy and bliss, suffering and displeasure, inhalation and exhalation, being free from these eight faults. Thus, the definite number of four and five branches is also determined from the aspects of antidote, benefit, and the branch of location. Second, of the four objects of the formless realms, the first is: having attained the fourth dhyana, seeing the faults of the form body and the qualities of the formless realm, in order to reverse the perception of form, one cultivates only the perception of space, which is free from characteristics such as color, shape, and touch. The appearance of grossness disappears, and only the perception of space arises, this is the first. Limitless consciousness, nothingness, neither perception nor non-perception, seeing the preceding realms as gross, in order to reverse the preceding, one is devoted to the mind of the succeeding. Third, the signs of attaining dhyana are the appearance of the body sinking into the ground, and the signs of attaining the formless samadhi are the appearance of floating in the sky. Fourth, in the Treasury of Knowledge it says: dhyana and formless samadhi rely on their own ground and the lower ground, without needing the lower ground. This is the general statement. The noble one at the peak of existence, having directly realized nothingness, exhausts defilements. This is the specific statement. Furthermore, dividing it into three paths of cultivation, great, medium, and small, there are nine. Each of these has the path of preparation, the path of no interruption, the path of liberation, and the path of distinction, so there are thirty-six. Like this, to cultivate this path, one must cultivate the pure, definite arising, eightfold noble path. That is: on what object, in what way, what is the essence, the necessity, and the meaning of the words, these five. The first is on the four truths. Second, in what way? Having right view at the time of the path of seeing

Thus, the Dharma-nature of the Four Noble Truths is understood and determined through the gate of decisive ascertainment. Through conceptual thought, such understanding is analyzed through the means of logic and reasoning, and the manner in which it is represented to others is established and made comprehensible. Speech expresses the nature of the understanding of the Dharma-nature, which is free from elaboration, using mere words as representations, demonstrating it to others through the three means of explanation, debate, and composition, and instilling faith in pure views. Through the culmination of actions, all conduct is in harmony with the Dharma and not in contradiction to it, thus inspiring faith in pure morality. Livelihood is unmixed with the food of wrong livelihood and sin, and inspires faith in pure right livelihood. Effort repeatedly familiarizes oneself with the meaning of the Dharma-nature that has already been seen, thus acting as an antidote to afflictions. Mindfulness holds the objects of calm abiding and insight without forgetting, thus acting as an antidote to the near afflictions of forgetfulness. Samadhi accomplishes samadhi free from faults such as sinking and excitement, and enhances the qualities of the path from higher to higher, thus acting as an antidote to opposing factors. Third, the essence: The eightfold noble path, such as right view, can also be reduced to four branches, as the *Madhyāntavibhāga* states: 'Decisive ascertainment and expression, and three that cause others to believe, the rest are branches of antidotes.' Fourth, the purpose: To completely abandon what is to be abandoned through cultivation. Fifth, the meaning of the words: Understanding the meaning of Dharma-nature is the noble path, which is its branch. Fourth, the general meaning of the words for the path of cultivation: To familiarize oneself with what has been seen. Fifth, the ground: Combined with the nine paths, from the stainless ground to the cloud of Dharma. Thus, if the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are condensed into substances, they are ten or eleven: faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom, plus joy, extreme joy, pliancy, equanimity, realization, and morality, making ten. Among these, the four mindfulnesses are included in wisdom, the four right abandonments are included in diligence, and the four legs of miraculous power are included in samadhi. Right discrimination of Dharma and right view are wisdom, and speech, the limit of action, and livelihood are morality. Alternatively, if speech is counted separately, there are eleven. Fifth, in the path of no more learning, there are five: basis, essence, distinctions, meaning of the words, and ground. First
