The fourth dhyana has four branches: mindfulness, feeling of equanimity, intention of equanimity, and samadhi. Mindfulness and samadhi are the same as before, feeling of equanimity is indeterminate, and intention of equanimity is also the same as before. Among them, that which possesses the five branches of investigation, analysis, etc., is merely the coarse aspect of the first dhyana's actual state. From that, that which is without investigation but possesses analysis is the distinguished aspect of the actual state. Abandoning both investigation and analysis is the second dhyana. Abandoning investigation, analysis, and joy is the third dhyana. Abandoning those three and pleasure is the fourth dhyana. Even if one has not attained the actual state of dhyana, the correct practice of the first dhyana's proximity is also the basis for vipashyana, therefore it is called 'proximity indispensable.' That proximity and the actual state of the first dhyana have two aspects: coarse and distinguished. The remaining three and six are called the six grounds of dhyana. Secondly, the formless realms do not have a distinction of branches, therefore they are distinguished by object and aspect. One who has attained the fourth dhyana, having blocked the perception of shapes such as squares and circles, the perception of colors such as white, yellow, red, and green, and the perception of tangible objects such as mountains and houses, contemplates all phenomena as like space. Having transcended all perceptions of form and abiding in a state like space, is the infinity of space. Having abandoned clinging to just space, and abiding in the state of consciousness that thinks 'it is space,' is the infinity of consciousness. Having also abandoned clinging to just consciousness, and abiding in the state of 'there is nothing,' is nothingness. Having also abandoned clinging to 'there is nothing,' and examining the perception that thinks 'there is nothing,' having blocked all coarse movements of perception and abiding in just subtle perception, is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. This is also called neither existence nor non-existence. Furthermore, from the distinction of equipoise and subsequent attainment, there are two: equipoise and subsequent attainment being of the same essence, and being of different essences. The first, the case of being of the same essence, is when the mind is placed in single-pointed equipoise, all coarse movements of mind and mental factors cease, and the mind abides in a state without thought, this is equipoise. At that time, the sense consciousnesses have not ceased, all appearances of objects appear, but the clear aspect without grasping is subsequent attainment.

Professor. Secondly, the difference between meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment is: when the mind is focused on one object, it is meditative equipoise; when one arises from meditative equipoise and engages in activities such as eating and sleeping, not separating from the illusory mindfulness and vigilance, this is subsequent attainment. The so-called subsequent attainment of indulgence refers to the mind being separated from mindfulness and awareness, falling into distraction. Therefore, this state of indulgence does not exist after attaining the pure lands. The difference between meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment exists until one attains Buddhahood. Because engaging in activities while in meditative equipoise is a unique characteristic of the Buddhas alone. In terms of philosophical schools, the Vaibhashika school asserts that the apprehended object is indivisible atoms, and consciousness is indivisible moments, as ultimately existent. As stated in the Abhidharmakosha, "What is destroyed or distinguished by intellect, that which the intellect does not accept, like a pot of water, exists conventionally, while ultimate existence is different from that." This means that if it is destroyed, the intellect no longer accepts it, like a pot; if the intellect excludes others, the intellect no longer accepts it, like water. Coarse things are acknowledged by conventional truth. Ultimate existence is different from this. What cannot be destroyed or excluded by intellect are indivisible atoms and moments, which are ultimately existent. The Sautrantika school believes that whatever has the power to perform a function is a real entity, therefore, whatever has the power to perform a function is ultimately existent. Other than what has the power to perform a function, what cannot perform a function, the unreal, is conventional truth. As stated in the Pramanavarttika, "Whatever has the power to perform a function, here it is said to be ultimately existent; the rest is conventionally existent; these are the definitions of their own and common characteristics." This means that whatever has the power to perform a function is said to be ultimately existent here; the rest is conventionally existent. These are the definitions of self-characteristics and common characteristics. Therefore, all self-characteristics are ultimately existent, and all common characteristics are conventional. Self-characteristic, ultimate truth, real entity, impermanence, etc., have the same meaning. Common characteristic, conventional truth, unreal entity, permanence, etc., have the same meaning. For example, the self-characteristic of a pot that can hold water is both a real entity and ultimately existent. The object of appearance of mental discrimination, the common characteristic and unreal entity, is conventional truth. In the view of the Mind-Only school, among the three natures of the imagined, dependent, and perfected, the apprehended external object, the mind that apprehends the external object, and all the names established on these two are the imagined nature. The essence of all these is mind and mental factors, which is the dependent nature. On the dependent nature, there is no imagined nature...
