The path of cultivation for those who return and those who do not return; an Arhat is a path of no more learning. If these are connected with the eight grounds of the Hinayana path, then obtaining certainty of the Hearer's lineage on the path of joining is the ground of lineage. Entering the stream-enterer is the eighth ground, because counting backwards from the fruit of Arhat is the eighth. The fruit of the stream-enterer is the ground of seeing, which is seeing the meaning of the four truths for the first time. The fruit of the once-returner is the ground of attenuation, because having abandoned all but the three minor afflictions of desire, the desire for desire is attenuated. The fruit of the non-returner is the ground of detachment from desire, because having abandoned the nine afflictions of desire, one is detached from the desire for desire. An Arhat is the ground of having done what was to be done, having completed all activities for one's own benefit and attained the wisdom of knowing exhaustion and non-arising. Knowing exhaustion and non-arising is knowing that the afflictions of the three realms that existed before have been exhausted, and that they will not arise in the future. Entering the once-returner, entering the non-returner, and entering the Arhat are also called the Hearer's ground. On top of that, considering all eight abodes of the solitary realizer as one, it is called the ground of the solitary Buddha, which is the eight grounds of the Hinayana path. In the classification of refuge, the refuge of cause is taking refuge in the Three Jewels that have already arisen in the continuum of others, in the manner of a teacher, a path, and a friend. The refuge of effect is aspiring to attain the Three Jewels in one's own continuum in the future. What is the difference between this and aspiration? Jetsun Sonam Tsemo said that aspiration must necessarily have a vow, so the difference between these two is whether or not one is controlled by the iron hook of a vow. Kunkhyen Chökyi Gyalpo said that aspiration is focused on the benefit of others, while this refuge is focused on one's own benefit. However, in the context of this treatise, the refuge of the causal characteristic vehicle is called the refuge of cause, and the refuge of the resultant secret mantra vehicle is called the refuge of effect, and both of these have two refuges of cause and effect as before. According to the Great Vehicle of characteristics, the Buddha with the four bodies and five wisdoms is the nature of scripture and realization,

Taking refuge in the noble Sangha, the Three Jewels residing in places, as a teacher or friend, is the refuge of the cause. Now, by practicing the path, wishing that the Three Jewels may arise in one's own mind-stream in the future is the refuge of the result. According to the Secret Mantra, on top of the previous three jewels, the deity on whom the flower falls is the main deity of the mandala, the Buddha is the generation and completion stages including the four or six tantra classes; the heroes and heroines of the three places (twenty-four sacred sites, thirty-two realms, eight great charnel grounds), the oath-bound protectors of the Dharma, etc., are the Sangha. All of these are the embodiment of the root guru, the Buddhas, whose body is the Sangha, whose speech is the sacred Dharma, whose mind is the Buddha, knowing that the Three Jewels are all-inclusive, and not grasping the object of refuge and the refuge-giver as separate, taking refuge in a state of non-duality is the refuge of the cause. From the accomplishment of wisdom, it says: 'The Buddha is the mind free from words, the unchanging and stainless is the Dharma, the perfectly complete qualities are the Sangha, therefore one's own mind is supreme.' As it is said, one's own mind, the clear light of wisdom, abiding in the complete cessation of faults, free from what is to be purified, and abiding in the complete possession of qualities, free from what is newly attained, is the Buddha; the Dharma nature that is originally unchanging, the essence of stainlessness is the Dharma; the qualities gathered without distinction are the Sangha, knowing that one's own mind is the nature of the Three Jewels right now is the refuge of the result. This is how it should be explained. The three places are: twenty-four sacred sites, thirty-two realms, eight great charnel grounds. In the seventh chapter, when discussing the four immeasurables, focusing on sentient beings who do not have happiness, wishing them to have happiness is loving-kindness; focusing on sentient beings tormented by suffering, wishing them to be free from suffering is compassion; focusing on sentient beings who do not have suffering and have happiness, wishing not to be separated from them is joy; focusing on sentient beings who have attachment and aversion, wishing them to be free from the attachment and aversion of near and far, the cause of happiness and suffering, is equanimity. Therefore, the difference between loving-kindness and compassion is: the object is the same, like a sick person wanting to be free from illness, but if one focuses on an object that does not have the happiness of being without illness, wishing them to have happiness is loving-kindness, regarding the suffering of illness
