The Stream-Enterer. If one abandons the sixth level of meditative abandonment in the desire realm, one attains the state of Once-Returner. If one abandons either the seventh or eighth level of meditative abandonment in the desire realm, but not the ninth, one enters the state of Non-Returner. If one completely abandons meditative abandonment in the desire realm, one attains the state of Non-Returner. From the point when a Non-Returner enters the path of abandoning meditative abandonment in the higher realms, up to the abandonment of the eighth level of meditative abandonment in the peak of existence, this is the Stream-Enterer to Arhatship. Completely abandoning all remaining obscurations of the three realms is the state of Arhatship. Arhats are also divided into those liberated through wisdom and those liberated through both aspects. Relying on the unwavering proximity of the first dhyana, and through the transcendental path, having abandoned all the obscurations of the three realms, even after attaining the state of Arhat, if one cannot enter the eight liberations, this is liberation through wisdom. Having abandoned meditative abandonment through both worldly and transcendental paths, being able to enter the nine successive absorptions, this is liberation through both aspects. Liberation through wisdom is when one abandons only the obscuration of afflictions with the wisdom of the transcendental path that realizes selflessness. Liberation through both aspects is when one is liberated from both the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of meditative absorption through both worldly and transcendental paths. The obscuration of meditative absorption refers to being liberated from the obstacles to obtaining the mind of meditative concentration, such as lethargy and agitation. The definitions of these four pairs are: Because one has entered the stream of the path that obtains the fruit, it is called Stream-Enterer. Because one takes birth once in the desire realm, it is called Once-Returner. Because one will no longer be born in this desire realm, it is called Non-Returner. Because one has vanquished all enemies of afflictions, it is called Arhat. Because one strives to obtain the fruits of these four Stream-Enterers, it is called Stream-Enterer. If they abide on which path, the lower Abhidharma scholars consider the subsequent awareness of the path to be the path of meditation. If one is in the state of fruition, it is generally accepted that one has attained the path of meditation, so it is Stream-Enterer. Once-Returner and Non-Returner are on the path of meditation, and Arhat is on the path of no more learning. According to the higher Abhidharma scholars, the subsequent awareness of the path is considered the path of seeing, so Stream-Enterer is the path of seeing.
