Desire, etc. Furthermore, in order to generate unarisen virtuous dharmas, there is desire, etc., and in order to increase arisen virtuous dharmas, there is desire, etc. Among these, generating desire is, first of all, in the manner of having faith in what should be adopted and abandoned. Effort is in the manner of the mind not being distracted from that to another place. Diligence is for the purpose of pacifying agitation, sinking, etc. Focusing the mind is, if one becomes sunk, then focusing the mind by focusing on a place that makes the mind happy, such as the body and qualities of the Buddhas. Settling the mind is, if one becomes agitated, then settling the mind by focusing on an object that makes one weary, such as the suffering of samsara. Here, the two unwholesome things, arisen and unarisen, and the two wholesome things, arisen and unarisen, these four are the objects, and generating desire, etc., are the aspects. The meaning of the words is that the two arisen and unarisen unwholesome things are named by one aspect of abandoning them, just as naming a special feature of a cow as "tail." Third, the four legs of magical power are divided into three. First, the object is to become one from many, and to become one from many, and so on. The aspects are the aspects of magical power, that is, the aspects of magical direct perception are to contemplate the body as light. For the eye of sight, all directions appear and are pervasive. For the ear, all directions are pervaded by sound. For knowing the minds of others, one contemplates that one's own body has such a mind, and that other such bodies also have such minds. Recollecting past lives is to contemplate in a forward and reverse manner from the moment the mind has just ceased until the intermediate state connects the aggregates. If we divide them, there are four: the magical foot of concentration with desire, with the activity of abandoning; diligence, etc.; mind, etc.; and investigation, etc. First, because one has faith in the meaning to be meditated upon, one strives for the meaning, which is desire. Entering with joy is diligence. Concentration in which the mind is focused on one point is concentration. Examining whether faults such as agitation and sinking have entered into it is examination. The meaning of the magical foot with the activity of abandoning.

Nami, abandoning the five faults and relying on the eight efforts. The five faults are: laziness, forgetfulness, lethargy and excitement, non-application, and application. The ways in which these become faults are: Laziness is a fault at the beginning, during the time of practice, because one does not practice meditation with diligence. Forgetfulness is a fault during the time of practice, because one forgets the key instructions on how to meditate on samadhi. Lethargy and excitement are faults when samadhi arises in the mindstream, because they make samadhi defective. Non-application is a fault when lethargy and excitement arise, because it does not counteract lethargy and excitement. Application is a fault when lethargy and excitement subside, because even after lethargy and excitement have subsided, if one still applies the antidote, the mind will wander again. The antidotes to these are the eight efforts of abandonment: aspiration, faith, diligence, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. The first four are the antidotes to laziness. The actual antidote is diligence, and the other three are its branches. These are also cause and effect, basis and dependent. If there is aspiration for meaning, diligence will arise, so aspiration is the cause and diligence is the effect. The basis of the cause, aspiration, is faith, because if there is trusting faith, aspiration for meaning will arise. What depends on the effect, diligence, is pliancy, because if one strives with diligence, pliancy will arise in body and mind. The antidote to forgetfulness is mindfulness, because it does not forget the object of focus. The antidote to lethargy and excitement is awareness, because it also recognizes whether lethargy and excitement have arisen or not. The antidote to non-application is attention, because it attends to the antidote to lethargy and excitement. The antidote to application is equanimity, because it abides in the natural state when lethargy and excitement have subsided. The meaning of the term "feet of miraculous power" is: miraculous power is the five superknowledges, etc., and because it is like the root of accomplishing it, it is the feet of miraculous power. The fourth is the five faculties, the object of focus is that these are the application of the path of seeing, therefore.
