The essence. There are three functions. First, the temporary way of arising is: only arising from the Bodhicitta, which has the essence of emptiness and compassion, is the definite place. Ultimately, all beings, such as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, are also the universal support for showing the vessel of unsurpassed Bodhi. The essence of the Path-Knowledge is: gaining independence from the afflictions, and engaging in benefiting sentient beings as long as Samsara exists, is the nature of the Path-Knowledge. The function is: gathering sentient beings who have not yet gathered, and enabling those who have gathered to mature and be liberated. Second, the Path-Knowledge with branches includes: the Path-Knowledge of Shravakas, the Path-Knowledge of Pratyekabuddhas, and the Path-Knowledge of Bodhisattvas. The first one also includes the essence of the path, its cause, its distinction, and two commonalities. The first one is: the Path-Knowledge itself, etc., can be known from phrases such as "should be known". This is the way of the Bodhisattva's Path-Knowledge. At the appropriate time, one should fully understand through combining the aspects of the Four Noble Truths, such as impermanence, etc., from the generation of Bodhicitta, the main practice of non-objectification, to the final dedication, etc. One should know that this is the Path-Knowledge of the Shravaka's Path-Knowledge. Homage to the Venerable Maitreya! Second, the definite part is: indicated by phrases such as "the noble ones, etc., because they have not seen". The cause for the arising of the Path-Knowledge of the noble Shravakas in the continuum is: on the path of joining the Great Vehicle, grasping the aspects of the Four Truths, such as impermanence, etc., in a way that realizes the absence of truth, and then meditating. Because the nature of forms, etc., is empty. Focusing on the emptinesses in an undifferentiated way is the heat stage. The peak stage is not focusing on the individual nature of forms, etc. The forbearance stage is focusing on not focusing on the characteristics of forms, etc., such as permanence and impermanence, by dwelling in a way of negation. Starting from the ten grounds, the sutras extensively explain not being attached to them, therefore it is said to be the most excellent of Dharma. Why is there no place to dwell because of attachment to them? Because one has attained the wisdom that knows all aspects of the Buddha, and has not truly seen the dharmas. Because for the noble one who has become the measure for all knowable things, the reason for not focusing is reasonable. Second, the Path-Knowledge of the Pratyekabuddha.

The wisdom of the path on the ground has three aspects: the distinction of the practitioner's basis, the nature of the path to be traversed, and the concordant parts of the cause's definitive understanding. The first has two aspects: the actual distinction and refuting disputes about it. The first is explained from 'self-originated nature' onwards as 'manifestly expressed,' because self-originated Buddhas realize by themselves without relying on others at the time of their last existence. Therefore, they do not need to be taught by others. Furthermore, what is included by 'also' is that they do not need to teach others themselves. Thus, like the rhinoceros horn, the wisdom of a solitary conqueror is profound in knowledge because it realizes the meaning that is not an object of expression in meditative equipoise. In subsequent attainment, what others do not understand from the signs of speech's results is profound in non-expression. It is manifestly expressed as profundity itself. The second, refuting disputes about it, is that being without sound and teaching the Dharma are contradictory. How can one teach the Dharma without sound? As it is said from 'whatever, whatever' onwards, 'it appears as such,' meaning that whatever beings are to be trained, whatever the meaning to be expressed is, and whatever their individual inclinations are, and however they wish to hear, the meaning to be shown to them appears as they wish to hear it, even without the sound of expression. Therefore, teaching the Dharma without sound is not contradictory. The second, the nature of the path to be traversed, is explained from 'object of apprehension' onwards as 'should be known.' Because one realizes that external objects of apprehension are without inherent existence, one abandons the conceptual thought of clinging to external objects. And because one does not realize that inner consciousness is without inherent existence, one does not abandon the conceptual thought of clinging to reality in the appearance of the apprehending subject as an object-possessor. And the distinction of the basis of the Dharma on which that path relies, the difference in lineage, is that it is superior to the path of the Hearers in three ways. Therefore, the wisdom of the path like the rhinoceros horn should be known as truly condensed. The third, the concordant parts of the cause's definitive understanding, is explained from 'imputed Dharma-nature' onwards as 'the supreme of Dharmas.' It means that one does not abandon what is nominally imputed, nor does one contradict the Dharma-nature. The aspect of showing is warmth. The aspect of distinguishing, i.e., differentiating, with things like the absence of increase or decrease in form, etc., is the peak. Because form, etc., are emptiness within, etc., the aspect of not completely grasping is patience. Form, etc., should be realized by the aspect of being without birth, which is Dharma.
