There are four based on Nirvana, which are twelve; considering body and life as one, and considering the two as separate, making fourteen. The first of these is considering that both self and world are neither permanent nor impermanent, which means considering that the two exist unchanging from the beginning, later arise suddenly, and considering the two as both or neither, which is based on the prior extreme. The second is considering that both self and world are neither with end nor without end, which means considering that the two later exist as with end or without end, etc., which is based on the posterior extreme. The third is considering that both the Tathagata exists or does not exist after death, which means considering that my own nature sentient being exists or does not exist after death, etc., which is based on Nirvana. Among these, the self in self and world is considering the self of sentient beings, and the world is considering the basis of what is enjoyed. The Tathagata, as said in "Adornment Manifestation" and "Harm Small," if the self of my essence sentient being is regarded as the self to be liberated, it does not agree with farsightedness. The fourth is considering that the body is the life, and considering that life is another matter, and the body is also another matter. Also, in the ground of the earth, considering that life is the body, this is seeing the self as having form. Considering that life is another matter, and the body is also another matter, this is seeing the self as formless. The second, the way to combine these four minds into two ways of affirmation and negation is, as said in "Sunlight," the mind entering its own object, which is called shaking. As said and so on, the first three are shaking, the third, the third, and the thirteenth are taken out after unfolding from within, and the same as that; the second three are gathering, the fourth, the third, and the fourteenth are combined with contraction. The fourteenth is that the body is not life, and life is not the body, because both are negated. Among them, the first two do not negate the action, the mind enters its own object, so it is affirmation; the latter two are preventing the action, not entering the object, so it is negation. The third has both views of affirmation and negation, and the fourth, although both affirmation and negation are prevented, is placed in affirmation and negation, because action exists and does not exist.

To establish is to say "it exists." To negate is to say "it does not exist," which is to preclude. To expand is to say "it exists and it does not exist." To contract is to preclude both, saying "it is neither existent nor nonexistent." Likewise, one should understand permanence and impermanence, and so on. Thus it is said. Third, whose view is it? The Samkhya school believes that after death, one exists in an unmanifest way, so the notion that one arises after death is their divided view. The Lokayata and others believe that after death, the self is completely destroyed and does not continue to exist, so the contracted view that one does not arise after death is their view. The Jainas believe that temporary existences have different stages, so both the divided and contracted views of arising and not arising after death are their views. The proponents of a self believe that the self and the aggregates are neither the same nor different, and cannot be expressed, so the view that neither arises nor does not arise after death, which precludes both division and contraction, is their view. Likewise, one should apply this to permanence and so on; this is the teacher's intention. Regarding this meaning, some say that although the sutra first speaks of having an end, it would be acceptable to reverse it for the Samkhya and Lokayata schools. If that were the case, affirmation and negation would be reversed, which is unreasonable. When it is spoken, one should know that "end" means exhaustion, the final part, nearness, direction, and inferiority. As it says, the meaning of "end" is the part of the aggregates in the next life, so it is said that the consciousness aggregate of this life has the part that enters the next life, and it is very reasonable to reverse it from that which does not have an end. That is, dividing and contracting are shaking and gathering, which have only the forms of affirmation and negation. Affirming both and negating both are expanding and contracting. It is not clear whose views the last two are, but the Vaisheshika school believes that the self has form, and the Samkhya school believes that it is consciousness, so Buddhi has said that it can be applied to those two. Fourth, the explanation of terms is: why are these fourteen called unstated? Because these were questions asked of the Tathagata, and all questions started from the self, so because there was no basis, he thought there was no difference to analyze, so he did not answer, so they are unstated. Then, why did he not say that there is no self like that? Because those no-self
